As I entered her house, the lights were kept switched off, while the vague daylight dimly lit the living room. Pu di was seated in the sofa holding her face between her hands, looking terribly sad. Mallika's illness had turned out to effect everyone both mentally and physically. Seeing me, Pu di gave me a small smile and asked in her sweet voice hiding her grief,
"Sumedh, you here?"
"He has come to see Mikku. Pu take him to her room.", Rushi bhaiya said and walked away from there. I could very well figure out that he too was sad and worried about his little sister's state. He may be overprotective at times but is truly a loving big brother.
After he went away, I followed Pu di towards her room upstairs. As we went closer to her room, my heart thumped louder against my rib cage and I kept my hand on my chest to stop it as I feared if Pu di hears it!
When we reached at her door, Pu di opened it without knocking and after having a look inside signalled me to come in.
"She is sleeping"
"I'll wait till she wakes up", I said looking at her innocence filled face. Pu di left us alone in the room and I came and sat beside her.
Her petite frame laid on the bed and she looked nothing short of a sleeping beauty. Her eyes were closed and she looked very serene. The strands of hair which rested on her face, flew up and again came down as she breathed in and out. The scene was extremely endearing! Unable to hold myself, I tugged those few strands of her silky hair behind her ears. The last time I saw her, her face looked pale and dull with those dark circles beneath her eyes. But now she looked better yet the unusual silence she was holding was making me restless to know the reason for her such state. I feared if I was the one responsible for this..
The dark room though gloomy, felt calming due to this beautiful soul's presence. I got up and opened the window which was kept closed for long making home for the spiders to make their cobwebs. I chuckled thinking of how much Mallika fears spiders!
The cool fresh air gushed inside, touching our skins and cooling them down. The monsoon sky already appeared gloomy with full of tumultuous, dark, ragged clouds. Who knew that something as colourless as water could make clouds so dark. Few drops started to pour down ready to release a sudden shower. Soon it will turn into an endless music of droplets hitting window panes, rooftops and tree leaves, just like an old radio coming to life.
Rain is like God's own poetry, each drop is the single letter in the song of life. So we should keep flowing with the music and never stop.
A curtain of rain beat down from the heavens. As the sounds of the rain drops became intense, I decided to close the window so that her sleep doesn't get disturbed. After closing it, I made my way towards her and carefully settled beside her.
The thunder roared while it was raining cats and dogs shooting the windows like bullets. Lightning and thunder raged with fury. A flash forked and lighting and a great clap of thunder came close upon each other.
Her eyebrows twitched due to the sudden noises and I gently caressed her forehead to calm her. As I was lost in her, staring at her which gave me a sense of peace, later on I realized that she was holding my index finger in a tight grip like a baby as she was absorbed in her peaceful sleep. Aww, I can't take this cuteness any longer!
As the pitter patter sounds of the rain continued in the background, my eyes felt heavy and finally I closed them letting myself doze off for a while as sleep engulfed me and her strawberry fragrance mingled with my breathing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When I woke up, I found myself laying on her bed alone. I got up and sat straight trying to search for her and finally my eyes landed upon the figure sitting beside me with her face lowered and her long silk like hairs cascading down her shoulders. It also covered her face as it fell in front of her face and swayed with the wind coming from the open window. Some may have an eerie feeling seeing her like that but I didn't feel it, cause I knew she was depressed about something.
"Mallika!", I called out in a low voice while I placed my arm around her shoulder.
"Hmm", came the reply which was barely audible.
"How are you now?", I continued asking yearning for her to look at me. After a long pause, she replied,
"Fine"
"I'm happy that you're fine. Everyone was very tensed!"
"Oh!"
"If you don't mind, can I ask you something?"
"Hmm"
"Why were you crying that day?"
This time, she looked up and siding her hairs from her face, she finally looked at me with that magical tranquil gaze. Her lips trembled the same way as they did that day and her orbs became moist. Her breathing became more laboured as she struggled to inhale.
"C-Can w-we go out and t-talk in the b-balcony? I feel suffocated here", she asked in her soft voice with a depressed tone.
How can I deny those appealing eyes? This is the chance to break the barriers and let all the emotions flow now itself as if there will never be a tomorrow.
