Chapter 1

I visibly winced as I heard the raven-haired man's boot make contact with Eren Yeager's flesh.

Captain Levi of the Survey Corps.

Eren Yeager's tooth flew out of his mouth, the sound of it dropping across the floor echoing in the courtroom.

I was currently standing with the rest of the Garrison Regiment at Eren Yeager's trial. My hands folded behind my back as I stood in place. I had positioned myself towards the back of the crowd of Garrison soldiers, attempting to make my presence less known.

I didn't need to be present at the trial that decided which regiment would take custody of the mysterious boy. The presence of a Garrison military engineer wasn't required, nor had I been witness to Eren Yeager's transformation during the battle to retake Trost. However, Commander Pixis had said I was welcome to join, and my curiosity had gotten the better of me. When I had entered the courtroom earlier, I didn't know what I was expecting when I heard of a human that could transform into a titan. However, the pitiful boy chained to the stake in the ground in the middle of the room wasn't exactly what I had pictured.

He was just a young boy with shaggy brown hair and fear in his green eyes.

I grimaced and looked away as the Captain's foot once again smashed into the boy's stomach, an expressionless look on his face as he did so.

The Captain grabbed Eren by the shoulders, holding his form up as he used his knee to strike his face.

Gasps and muffled voices of confusion were heard throughout the courtroom. The guns that had been pointed at the young boy being lowered out of disorientation.

The beating continued. The soldiers, witnesses, and citizens gawked at the scene unfolding before them.

Eren gasped for breath as blood dripped down his nose and into his mouth, thinking he was finally catching a break from the bashing.

He thought wrong as Captain Levi's foot slammed into his head once more, causing his face to be trapped between the Captain's boot and the floor.

"This is a personal opinion, but I believe pain to be the best way to train someone," the Captain hissed. "What you need is to be trained like a dog, not a man."

Captain Levi's sharp-grey eyes narrowed in on the boy slammed beneath his boot. "It's easier to kick you while you're kneeling too."

The Captain continued brutally kicking the boy while he was kneeling before him. I glanced around at the rest of the Survey Corps. While the soldiers in my own regiment, the Garrison, and the Military Police held shocked expressions, the Survey Corps members appeared serious and stoic, as if they knew that this was going to happen.

The 13th Commander of the Survey Corps, Erwin Smith, was staring directly at Eren and Captain Levi. Commander Erwin was a good-looking man. He was tall, and his icy blue eyes were framed by thick brown eyebrows. He was neat in appearance as well, his short blonde hair cropped in an undercut. His serious and calculating expression was directed at Eren.

"Wait, Levi..." Nile Dawk, the Commander of the Military Police spoke up, raising his hand as if trying to stop Captain Levi from kicking the boy further.

"What is it?" The Captain raised his eyebrows, his foot pressed into Eren's face.

"That's dangerous," Nile Dawk's tired eyes narrowed, his thinning dark hair framing his sober expression. "What if he gets angry and turns into a titan?"

Captain Levi kicked Eren once more before grabbing his head by his hair. "What are you saying? Aren't you planning on dissecting him?"

Commander Nile Dawk's eyes widened.
