Chapter 13

I continued to walk alongside Captain Levi with slightly rosy cheeks from our earlier encounter. Minutes later, he took an unexpected turn that seemed to lead away from the exit of the Military Police headquarters.

"Captain? I think the exit's this way," I gestured to the other direction.

"You go on ahead. Your squad left the priest in a room over here to calm down and clean himself up before we headed out. I've got to go grab him," Levi replied coolly.

I nodded in understanding and smiled, "See you out there."

He looked my way and nodded briefly before turning back around in the direction where Pastor Nick supposedly was.

I also turned back and began heading towards the exit once more.

I soon left the Military Police headquarters and found myself outside in the cool, crisp night air. Both Military Police and Survey Corps soldiers were bustling about; most of the Survey Corps members were busy saddling horses and readying supplies for our journey to Ermich district. The Military Police were still working on helping citizens and repairing damage caused by the days' events.

A shoulder roughly brushed past me, causing me to stumble as I walked in search of the rest of my squad.

"Hey, watch where you're going!" A voice snapped to my left, causing me to glance in its direction as I gripped my shoulder.

The young man named Jean Kirstein was glaring annoyingly at the soldier who brushed past me; he held a box of supplies under one of his arms, most likely for the journey to Ermich. The soldier paid no mind to either of us as he continued to walk away without sparing us even a glance.

"Don't worry about it. I'm fine." I smiled warmly in Jean's direction, "Thank you, though."

The young man slightly blushed at my appreciation."Ah, no worries," he nervously scratched the back of his neck

"You're Jean, right?" I held out my hand for him to shake. "You doubled for Eren."

"Yeah, I am. Jean Kirstein," he told me as he warmly took my hand in his with his free arm.

"I'm Birdie. I'm sorry, I don't think I've formally introduced myself."

He laughed, "It's no worry. I know who you are."

My eyebrows raised, "Do you?"

"I saw you on the expedition the other day when you chased after Mikasa," he replied. "Armin also explained to me how you helped him come forward to the Commander about Annie."

I nodded in remembrance and shifted my feet from right to left, "Yeah...that's right."

"Thanks for helping us cadets, by the way," he spoke. "I appreciate it."

"It was really nothing," I put my hands up bashfully. "I just did what I could."

"Well...they're my friends, so I'm thankful," he replied.

He shifted and hardened his gaze to the ground, "The rest of my friends are out there now...probably fighting the titans that invaded Wall Rose."

That's right; the new cadets were all with Squad Mike within Wall Rose. They were probably already fighting and trying to find the hole within the wall.

"I'm sure they're all alright; Mike's entire squad is with them," I replied, gingerly placing a hand on his shoulder in comfort and smiling. "And he's one of the best."

"Oi, Pixis. What are you still doing milling about." I turned my head to see Captain Levi and Pastor Nick exiting the Military Police headquarters, which was still just a few feet behind me.
