Chapter 12

"Here, Birdie, pass me that end," Abel stuck his hand out to me as I passed him the corner of a sheet we were currently using to hide the face of the giant titan within the wall.

My squad had been ordered to immediately get to the top of the wall to cover the newly revealed titan with sheets temporarily until a more permanent fix could be implemented. Nifa, Keiji, Abel, and I were all hastily tying sheets together to form a large covering to drape over the colossal titan's face that eerily stared out upon Stohess district. Meanwhile, Moblit and Hange had dragged the priest, whose name I found out was Nick, to the top of the wall with us to question him.

So far, their interrogating was proving to be futile as Pastor Nick said nothing but to keep the titan's face covered and out of sunlight.

"Let's cover this bastard," Keiji directed as we lowered the patchwork covering over the titan's skinless face. "This will have to be temporary...we'll begin working on more permanent repairs in the early morning, before sunrise."

I nodded and maneuvered my way down the wall to secure the bottom end of the patchwork covering we had created. I took one last look at the unnerving expression of the titan before the sheets lowered over its face.

I immediately went to work with the rest of my squad to secure our makeshift covering to the wall. It took a little while, but soon enough, I was hammering the last stake into the wall that secured the sheets. I maneuvered my way back up the wall and landed beside Hange, who was still talking to Pastor Nick.

Hange inspected our work, "I guess that's good enough for now..."

She looked to the pastor kneeling at the edge of the wall as he stared intently at the titan now covered in sheets.

"What is it doing inside the walls?" Hange removed her goggles from her eyes and placed them on her forehead, revealing her serious expression, "And why did you people keep this a secret all this time? It's obvious you were aware of this."

The priest ignored her insistent questioning and got up from his kneeling position, "I have work to do!" He dusted himself off, "My temple and people have been left in ruins because of you people."

Hange's eyes narrowed, "You will answer me."

"I have nothing more to say to you. Get me down from here," Pastor Nick said.

"Certainly," she sighed before grabbing the pastor by his collar and dragging him to the edge of the wall. "Will here do?"

Hange draped the older man over the edge; the only thing keeping him from falling straight down to the ground was Hange's firm grip on his collar.

"Hange!" I raised my voice slightly.

"Squad Leader!" Moblit yelled.

"All of you, stay back," she warned.

Raising my hands in surrender, Moblit and I stepped back from our Squad Leader and stood with the rest of our squad. Hange's tone and action surprised me. Her usual chipper attitude and playful way of talking were gone; instead, it was replaced by assertiveness and aggression.

"What do you think you're doing?!" Pastor Nick shrieked, reaching towards Hange's firm grasp. He curled his fingers around her wrists in a firm grip in the hope it would save him from the fall.

"What do you think you're doing?" Hange snapped, "Do you understand why the Scouts have shed so much blood? To take back our freedom from these damn titans! Yet now I am finding out that one lives within the walls that are supposed to protect us?"
