Chapter 5
A few days had passed since I had seen really anyone. I also hadn't been able to find Hange the last couple of days. Since Sawney and Bean had died, she'd gone off the deep end for a bit. I had, however, seen Moblit once during lunch. He was taking a meal up to her and had told me that she just needed some rest. Furthermore, he mentioned that she was planning out her experiments with Eren.
I had been left alone to work quietly until the prototype was finished. Upon creating a working prototype, those who knew of the Commander's hidden agenda for the 57th expedition would assist me in producing more.
Currently, I was doing some finishing touches on the prototype. I would hopefully complete this by tonight so that tomorrow I could begin testing.
"Hi, Birdie," I heard a voice coming from the entrance, causing me to look up.
"Hange!!" I smiled brightly, having missed her the past few days.
She came up to me and immediately started examining my prototype and the notes on the chalkboard.
"This is fantastic! The prototype is almost done," she said happily as she examined my work.
"Almost, just a few finishing touches then I can begin testing."
Hange nodded, still engrossed in the special target restraining weapon.
"Oh! Hange. I have been meaning to give this to you."
I reached for one of my journals and took out the folded-up drawing of Sawney and Bean. Having placed it there for safekeeping until I found Hange.
I passed it to her, and she opened it up.
"I know how much they meant to you. It's not much but I figured you would want it," I told her softly.
"Thank you, Birdie. I truly appreciate this," She patted my head and smiled. She folded the drawing back up and placed it into her coat pocket.
"Anyways, Hange, what can I do for you? Here to check up on me?" I winked at her.
"Actually, I was wondering if you were up for a bit of a break today?" She replied.
"A break? I don't know Hange. This prototype won't finish itself..." I said, looking wearily at the incomplete weapon.
"You deserve it, Birdie! I know you've been cooped up in here, and besides...I want you to come with me to oversee my experiments with Eren. I spoke with Levi and he agreed to let Eren transform!"
"Well...if you put it that way, how could I say no," I agreed with a laugh.
She smiled at me and dragged me out of the building.
We met up with Moblit and grabbed our horses and ODM gear to head over to Squad Levi. Hange led us close to the former headquarters, to an abandoned farm with a deep well.
We got off our horses to greet Squad Levi, who was already there. Hange went over to talk to Captain Levi about something, probably about the experiment.
Eren looked nervous, I doubt he knew how to control his ability, so it was understandable.
"Hi, Eren," I walked up to him, smiling. I had originally been very fearful of this boy, but after getting to know him briefly, he was just as confused about his ability as the rest of us. His power was scary, but if he learned to use it properly, he would be a great help to mankind.
"Oh, hi, Birdie. What are you doing here," he asked.
"Hange asked me to come along, and I needed a break from my work," I replied, stretching my arms high above my head.
