Chapter 3

It was around noon when I finished getting situated in my new living space. I sat at my desk and contemplated what to do next. I knew at some point I should report to Hange, but she had only just left a few minutes prior. I didn't have too many things to unpack, meaning it only took a short while to put my belongings away. Not wanting to waste time lost in thought, I decided to crack open a journal I used for drawing various diagrams and ideas.

Capturing titans...

I knew the usual procedure involved lots of barbed netting. However, I knew it would take more than that to capture an intelligent titan alive. Geez...I hope Hange had a better plan than that to take out titans similar to the Eren boy. What about that Colossal Titan that kicked in the gates of Shiganshina District five years ago? Or the Armoured Titan who caused Wall Maria to fall? If the titans that Commander Erwin was wanting to capture were anything like those two, barbed netting was not going to cut it.

I drew some rough sketches of the two titans I had seen this morning, Sawney and Bean. They were terrifying, their exaggerated features made me shudder. I penciled in their wide eyes and big smiling mouths. How could something look so human but not at the same time?

After some time, the majority of the drawings were completed, I only needed to add a few details to their faces. As I was drawing, my mind was reeling about various weapons that I had worked on and researched in the past. I was desperately searching for anything that could assist in the capture of these titans. Cannons? Foothold traps? Multiple large snares? Maybe these, in combination with the barbed netting, could bring down one of these intelligent titans.

No, it wasn't good enough. Maybe if I combined weaponry, creating some kind of variant-

An abrupt knock at my door interrupted my concentration, causing my pencil to draw a line straight through Bean's head. Damnit. I would have to think about this later. I quickly got up and opened the door to a man donned in a Scout's uniform, he had a kind face that was nicely framed by light brown hair.

"Hello?" I said expectantly.

"Hi, you are Birdie I assume?" he replied.

I nodded.

"Hange sent me to come to grab you for some lunch. I'm Moblit," he smiled and reached for my hand.

"Hi Moblit," I replied, returning the handshake.

"Are you a part of Hange's squad?" I asked expectantly.

"Yes, actually...I'm technically the vice-captain, but, in all honestly, I am more like Hange's glorified assistant," he laughed, his words holding no disdain for the Captain of our squad. I could tell he greatly admired her.

I laughed along with him, "Well, I am truly thankful to be a part of your squad, I promise I won't let you or Hange down."

He smiled in return, "Shall we go get us some lunch?"

"Yes, I'd like that," I said.

He led me to the mess hall that I had found during my exploration earlier, except this time it was no longer empty. A few tables were full of Scouts eating hungrily while conversing with one another. Moblit led us to a table where Hange and Captain Levi were sitting, along with a couple of faces I didn't recognize.

"Ah, Birdie! Come sit," Hange said, patting the seat beside her expectantly.

I did as I was told, sitting beside Hange and across from Captain Levi.

Moblit went off, probably going to grab the two of us lunch.

"Birdie, these two are on the Special Operations Squad led by Levi, this is Petra Ral," she said, gesturing towards a pretty woman with blonde-reddish hair. "And this is Oluo Bozado," she finished. The other individual was a man with a light-brown undercut and a cravat, much like the one I had seen Captain Levi wear.
