Chapter 4
The following day, I went to Commander Erwin's office to drop off the blueprints, which I had only just finished minutes prior. The hardest part was designing the functionality of the inner mechanics. The blueprints and detailed notes were all in a large envelope labelled, "special target restraining weapon," the name I had given the new gadget.
After dropping off the envelope, I decided to head to my room to clean up and then sleep. I hadn't slept at all the night before as the blueprints kept me occupied until morning; needless to say, I was exhausted.
Although I had only been here for a day, my room was already a disaster. Books and papers were scattered across the floor and all over my desk. I had just begun to pick up a book when my door burst open.
"BIRDIE!"
It was Hange.
"Today, you are going to meet the rest of the squad, and then this evening, we are travelling to the old headquarters to see Eren," she smiled at me, oblivious of my lack of sleep.
"Sure, Hange. I just need to get changed into some clean clothes," I said, stifling a yawn.
I was exhausted, but Hange looked so excited, and I did want to meet the rest of the squad and Eren. I had only ever seen him at the trial, and I was curious to see what he was actually like. Commander Erwin also said that the supplies to create a special target restraining weapon prototype wouldn't be here until tomorrow. So, I didn't have to worry about that today.
Hange nodded and left, telling me to meet her outside headquarters in 15 minutes. I changed into fresh pants and a t-shirt before putting on my new Scouts jacket and cloak. I attempted to run a brush through my hair, seeming pointless due to the knots created from pulling and running my hands through it all night. I did, however, get it to a point where it was presentable. Unruly but presentable.
I left my room and went outside, immediately being greeted by Hange, Moblit, and three other Scouts, which I could only assume were the rest of my squad.
Hange introduced me to each one.
There was Nifa, a girl with short reddish-brown hair and bangs. Keiji was a scary-looking man with a buzz cut and angular face. And finally, a blonde man named Abel who, like Hange, wore goggles.
They all seemed genuinely happy to have a new member of their squad. They appeared to be kind people, just like Hange and Moblit.
Nifa approached me and began to chat with me about my career as a military engineer within the Garrison. She was cute and likable. Even the other two men seemed approachable, definitely more approachable than Captain Levi. Hange had a good squad, and I felt grateful to be a part of it.

The rest of the morning and afternoon went by quickly. After eating a meal, Hange took me to the stables to get situated with a horse. I hadn't ever ridden one because I never needed to. But, if I wanted to keep up with my fellow Scouts, I would have to learn. It was difficult the first few times, but I soon got the hang of it, to the point it was actually quite fun.
Despite wanting nothing more than to sleep, Hange already had plans for the two of us to travel to the old Survey Corps headquarters to talk to Eren about experimenting with his titan form. I did really want to meet Eren, and Hange looked so excited, so I agreed. We ate a quick dinner, packed up our horses, and headed to the old castle where Levi and his squad were residing.
The journey there was quick, Hange keeping me awake throughout the entire horseback ride with her ramblings. She was a lot to take in, but I enjoyed the easy conversation and bright attitude. She was an impressive and kind leader, which made me incredibly thankful that I was under her command.
