Chapter 2

I was back in my own room within the Garrison soon after returning from the Survey Corps. It was evening now, and the barracks were quiet. I was packing my belongings when I heard a familiar knock on my bedroom door. I knew exactly who it was, as only one person would come to see me unannounced this late at night.

"Come in," I spoke.

To no surprise, my grandfather walked into the bedroom.

"Hey, Commander," I softly smiled at him.

"I assumed all went well today?" he asked.

"Yes, you are now looking at a full-fledged member of the Survey Corps," a slight laugh releasing from my lips.

Despite this being an order that he had ended up making, I knew that the news saddened him. He frowned slightly before continuing "Just please be safe."

I was fully aware that the only reason he gave in to my convincing was that he believed I could be of some assistance to the Scouts.

A small sigh escaped my lips as I encased my grandfather in a hug. He was scared for me. It was understandable as the survival rate was not good for the new Survey Corps recruits.

"Don't you worry, old man," I continued, "the Pixis bloodline is tough. I know that I'll be just fine."

He smiled down at me, "make sure you get some rest, my girl. I'll see you off in the morning."

He kissed the top of my head softly before exiting the room. After his retreating figure was gone, I continued packing my belongings into a suitcase.

My grandfather was my closest family. At the age of 12, I had decided to join the Cadet Corps after my mother died from a sudden illness. My mother's passing caused my father to spend more time at the bars than at home. Realizing his son had become a useless drunk of a father, Pixis took me in and encouraged me to join the Cadet Corps and eventually the Garrison upon finishing my three years of training. That is exactly what I ended up doing. I discovered my passion for inventing and improving upon contraptions and weapons that could further protect humanity from the titans. Noticing this, my grandfather placed me in a small squad that excelled in military engineering.

After Wall Maria fell when I was 17, I found myself wanting to discover ways to better protect humanity and destroy the titans that threatened to invade the walls. For the past five years, I had been assisting in the reinforcement of the walls and improving upon the cannons which acted as humanity's first line of defense. However, I always felt I could be doing more. My head was always full of ideas that I didn't have the resources to execute. In my spare time, I usually was at a desk, drawing up new types of weapons that I had no means of actually creating.

Sighing, I tucked my blonde hair behind my ears and rolled up my sleeves before continuing to pack. I ensured my various journals and books were the first items to be placed in my suitcase. After I felt I had packed most of my belongings, I changed and crawled into bed. Looking at the ceiling above, I wondered what tomorrow would bring.

The next morning, I took my time getting ready, wanting to look presentable for my new squad. I brushed my long, unruly hair that I had been too lazy to cut and changed into a clean uniform, knowing that this was most likely the last day I would don the symbol of the Garrison. It saddened me but I also knew that I would grow to appreciate my new regiment. I grabbed my suitcase, doing a last once-over to ensure that I didn't miss any of my belongings, before exiting the bedroom.

My grandfather was waiting for me outside the Garrison Regiment, already having a carriage ready to escort me to my destination. He took my luggage and placed it inside the carriage.
