The next morning they were tangled together in a tight hug. Sokka untangled his hand from Zuko's hair as gently as he could and moved it under the blanket so he could warm it up again. Zuko hummed in his sleep and nuzzled closer.
Sokka yawned a little, his arms around Zuko. He stared at the wall, savouring the moment.
A while later, Zuko woke up to Sokka snoring softly next to him. He untangled himself and slid out of bed. It was still fairly early so he seemed to be the only one up. He walked into Sokka's bathroom and looked at himself in the mirror.
Wincing, his gut quenched at the face looking back at him. He covered his scarred side with one hand and looked at just the unscathed skin. Looked like his mom... He uncovered the scar and then covered his good side. He still couldn't see that well out of his left eye...
Sokka walked into the bathroom, yawning. He scratched his back and blinked sleepily at himself in the mirror. Zuko hadn't really noticed him yet. He was too busy shivering and avoiding eye contact with himself.
Lightly pulling his arm away, Sokka kissed Zuko's scar. That seemed to snap him out of whatever was going on and he looked over to Sokka.
"Morning." Sokka smiled.
"Morning..." Zuko muttered back, his eyes wide in shock still.
"Did you have a good sleep?"
"Yeah. Really good."
Sokka smirked at the answer and then turned to grab a toothbrush. He also handed one still packaged to Zuko.
"Thanks..."

For breakfast, Sokka made eggs and bacon. The smell attracted Toph who settled down at the table across from Zuko and started up a conversation.
As Sokka served them, Toph was relating to Zuko about not being able to see.
"What's this about..?" Sokka queried, putting the pan back.
"Oh, I was just talking to Toph about how I can't really see out of this eye." Zuko pointed at his scar.
"Wait... You can't see out of it?!" Sokka uttered, this was news to him.
"Oh yeah... Did I never mention it?"
"No... Huh...," Sokka sat down "I'm gonna kill your Dad."
"Your Dad did that?!" Toph exclaimed, now it was her turn to be surprised.
"Yeah..."
"What the fuck?! I'll kick his ass! Where does he live?"
"Toph! Language!" Katara shouted.
She'd just walked in the kitchen and made her way over to the fridge. Toph huffed and sunk in her chair. Zuko laughed a little.
"Hey, Katara I made eggs and bacon but if you want some I can make more." Sokka offered.
"No, I'm okay thanks... I'll just eat a yogurt. I feel kind of gross right now."
"Suit yourself." Sokka shrugged, scooping up some egg.

"So yeah, my Uncle says that I shouldn't come back for a while... He says that he'll pay for me to stay in a hotel if it's a bother..." Zuko stated, sitting next to Sokka on the couch.
"I'll have to ask the gang but I'm sure there wouldn't be a problem with it." Sokka shrugged.
"Alright... I won't stay the whole time. I might go to a hotel for a little bit just cuz sometimes I need my space."
"No problem! I get that." Sokka shot him a smile.
Returning the gesture, Zuko put his phone down and scooted closer. Sokka let Zuko place his head on his shoulder and loosely played with his hair.
"So, do you want to do anything today?"
"Uh... School?" Zuko chuckled.
"Ah shoot. I forgot about that."
"Yeah I think I've missed enough of it, at least this Friday is a PA day." Zuko offered.
"Damn I gotta get ready then, do you want to take a shower first?"
"You can go first."
"Okay, I'll be back."

School was a lot more relaxed now that Jet was gone. Apparently he'd been expelled so Zuko wouldn't have to deal with him ever again. He still saw some of his cronies walking around but they didn't bother him. One of them came up to him and apologized but Sokka just told them to can it and leave them alone.
He sat with the gang at lunch and got to know all of them better. By far, he had the best relationship with Toph apart from Sokka. They had a lot in common and could bond over being blind and having mediocre (at best) social skills. Aang was friendly and very energetic so he was fairly comfortable to talk to. Katara was a little closed off, but Sokka explained that she's just like that sometimes with new people.
He felt a bit like an outsider at times which made sense since he wasn't a part of their inside jokes and he hadn't heard all their stories, but it wasn't too bad. They did their best to include him in their conversations and Sokka would sometimes turn to talk only to him.
"Oh right, so I have to ask you guys something." Sokka spoke up as they walked home.
"What's up?" Aang turned around to face him and walked backwards.
"So, Lee's tea shop is under repair meaning that he can't stay there for a little while. Would you guy be ok if he lived with us for a little bit?"
"N-not the whole time. My Uncle offered to pay for me to stay in a hotel room too." Zuko interjected.
"I'm fine with it, but we don't exactly have a spare room." Aang noted.
"He'll bunk with me." Sokka immediately stated.
"I don't care," Toph stated. "He can stay."
"Sure. Just don't touch my stuff." Katara added from up ahead.
"Can do..." Zuko mumbled back.
Sokka softly grabbed his hand and gave it a squeeze. And they continued on their way home.
