EPILOGUE

“AND that’s the story of your mummy and I’s teenage years. We had our ups and downs, but we made it! So you two better do your best in life, okay? Don’t be lazy like Uncle Mikey. All he did was play video games.” I spoke, chuckling at my own words.
The two of them laughed, clapping their hands as if I was telling them a fairytale even though it was literally the story of my life on how Alex and I met. Thanks to Michael, for starting everything and even brought us to where we were today.
“But, dad, Uncle Mikey is like the handiest video gamer ever. Have you played the games he programmed? They’re so cool!” the six-year-old enthusiastically told me. He really loved playing video games with that white haired friend of mine.
Yes, he still dyed his hair until today and I was surprised his hair still stuck onto his scalp in some way.
“You’re only six, Colton.”
He crossed his arms and pouted, “But I’m turning seven!”
I nodded in defeat—there’s no use arguing with your six year old son, right?
The two of them were waiting for their ride to school to arrive as their learning session started at 8:30 AM. They woke up really early today since their mom had tucked them in pretty early last night. They had enough sleep and now they’re bothering me about telling them a story. It was barely eight and we even had breakfast.
Nothing much, just sandwiches that I’d learn to make over the years and some leftover KFC from last night—Ashton’s treat but this time, he bought them since he didn’t work there anymore. Wow, I missed those days where he’d worked there as a part time job.
Today and onwards, he worked as a manager, owning his very own music shop downtown and even had his own instrument labels being shipped out of the country. It wasn’t famous, but it surely was making him a lot of money and besides, he was doing something he always loved. I always thought he’d open a restaurant and prove to the world his barbecue skills.
“Tell us more, daddy.” Little Lexi cooed and I shook my head, chuckling as someone beeped the familiar car horn from outside our house. I stood up and walked to the window to see Michael’s car parked right on the curb, waiting to pick up my precious twins for school.
At the same time, Alex came running down the stairs with ribbons in her hand. “Lexi! You forgot something!”
The blonde girl stood up with her backpack strapped on her shoulders, Alex kneeling down right behind her to tie the ends of her plaited hair with the cute pink ribbons. She looked really nice, hair in a neat bun, and the usual work suit which consisted of a white blouse, a grey blazer and matching slacks, and black shoes.
“What did you feed them for breakfast, Calum?” she asked as she hurriedly put the water bottles into both Lexi and Colton’s bags before we walked them to the front door.
I pointed towards the sandwiches on the table and she smiled, pecking my cheek before opening the door—all in a hurry and I wonder why.
Luke and Michael got out of the car and ran for the kids that were standing at the door right in front of us. “Where’s my awesome gamer?” Michael fist-bumped my son and I shook my head at the sight.
“Bro, you’re such a bad role model.” I commented and he stuck his tongue out at me. Michael Clifford didn’t change one bit and I wasn’t surprised at all.
The blonde boy (man) picked up Lexi and kissed her cheek before doing the same to my beautiful wife, also known as his sister. “Uncle Luke!” Lexi shouted, throwing her arms around the tall guy’s neck and he chuckled, rubbing her back. It was all so perfect, I wanted to tape and record every single moment we all experienced.
“Now, you all better head off or you’ll be late for school.” Alex demanded, receiving a “Yes, ma’am,” from Michael.
We both kissed their cheeks and waved at our beautiful twins while Michael bickered about something on the way to his car with Luke behind him, rolling his eyes. Poor guy had to live with Clifford’s big mouth forever. I always knew these two had something happening from way back then. I just knew.
As the car drove away, I shook my head and pulled Alex by the waist, pressing my lips to her forehead. “I’m so proud of us, baby.” I looked down to her face again as she nuzzled in my chest with her eyes closed.
“Me too.” She smiled, lifting her head up to attach our lips together.
The butterflies and fireworks were still there and were never gone. No matter how many times we’ve shared the same kisses and even made love, they never disappeared but only grew and grew and didn’t stop. I loved her too much, and she felt the same way. That was all we needed to end up here, where we were now.
“So, my favorite author has a meeting today?” I rubbed the small of her back and she smiled before nodding. “With who?”
“They’re making this worldwide shipping of the latest series and an author from the States had arrived yesterday. I got told that the next book will have to be a collaboration with that person and I heard that she’s an amazing writer herself. I’ve read her first ever book last night.”
I nodded, the proud feeling kept on blooming inside me. She was now a successful person and was living the dreams she had when we’re in high school. I could never be more proud. “No wonder you tucked the kids in early last night. You didn’t even give me a glance.” I joked and she giggled.
“Well, I’m free tonight.” Her voice was dragged out and I connected our lips once again with a knowing smile. “You dirty bastard.” She laughed and I pinched her bum in reply, receiving a yelp from her.
“Don’t mess with me.” I tried to sound serious but of course I failed. She shook her head and lied it on my shoulder, “Do you want me to drop you off at the office later? I’m heading that way since Ash needs me at the store today. More instruments being shipped.”
She shook her head, “Mali’s picking me up. She wants to meet someone that works in the same building. But you can come pick me up at three?”
I nodded and kissed the tip of her nose as we both smiled.
“I’m glad we’ve made it this far, Calum.” She took my hand and kissed my knuckles, “I love you so much.”
I pressed my lips on the top of her head lovingly, “I love you more and you know that. I’m glad too, you know. You did the right choice.”
“Hmm? What do you mean?”
I chuckled and pulled her into another embrace, “Remember what I first told you in high school?”
She grinned, nodding in agreement and I sighed in relief as she remembered them and spoke the sentence out loud. There was nothing more satisfying than having to tell that person one important message, and after years and years, they still remembered it.
They were only twelve words; simple but effective.
“You can choose to live with these scars, or leave them behind.”
