Thankfully, my trident was only a ways up the road, unscathed. John and Lemar stayed close, waiting for the ride they had called. For the most part, I had done a pretty good job of ignoring them as I walked back the way we'd came. I'd come across the guys sooner or later.
"Seriously, the truck will be here any minute. It's no problem to give you a ride," John insisted from behind me. My mouth thinned as well as my patience.
"I really don't mind walking."
"That's crazy. Come on," he said grasping my wrist, "I'm just trying to help. What does it look like if I don't help the former Captain America's-"
I snatched my arm back, giving him the evil eye, "Don't even finish that sentence because it's ridiculous. Plus, I'm a grown woman. I don't need an escort back. And lastly, don't touch me."
He finally shut up and there were a few moments of blissful silence. That is until the truck came rumbling up behind us. I didn't even look back, I just kept going. The military vehicle pulled up next to me and kept pace with my stride.
"Let us give you a ride," John sighed from the back of the vehicle, "We're going the same way anyway."
God, he wasn't going to leave me alone until I did. I came to a halt, and Lemar opened the back door so that I could climb in. Without a word, I sat in the back corner, distancing myself from them.
"Good, great. Let's go," he told the driver and we made our way back. The silence was awkward and uncomfortable, but I didn't care. I had nothing to say to him. I really wanted to wrestle the shield from him, so I was trying not to look at it.
Several miles later, I spotted two figures walking up the road. At least Sam and Bucky were both okay. As we approached them, the driver stopped a few feet ahead so that John could open the door to let them in.
"So that didn't go as planned, huh?" John said, but they ignored him, "Okaaaay."
I had stood to get out, but he slammed the door shut again and banged on the side to signal the driver to follow them. I wobbled as we moved and plopped back down with a huff.
"Thanks for waiting guys," I said, cocking my head as we drove beside them.
Bucky glanced up and replied, "Looks like you did just fine."
I narrowed my eyes at him and Sam sighed loudly.
"You knew where to meet if we got separated. We weren't going to just abandon you; you know that." he reminded me with a wry smile. Bucky muttered something under his breath, and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.
"Look, at least we know what we're up against now, huh? And we're pretty sure it's one of the big three, so..." John inserted, still hoping they'd get in.
"Aliens, androids, or wizards?" Sam confirmed.
"Pretty sure."
"There's no such thing as wizards," Bucky argued without even glancing our way.
'All right, then it's aliens or androids."
"Or Super Soldiers."
"Shit. Super soldiers, for real?" Lamar finally spoke.
"Yeah."
"Wow."
"All right, well, then we gotta work together," John concluded, shrugging his shoulders as if it were decided.
