Your POV
So, we spent days trying to study, knowing all things about what's coming, and participate in the adventures' exam. We tried doing our best in our heads while having a good chance of passing the exam with passing results as a beginner rank.
Ave did give out some helpful tips when knowing what the exam is about. As expected that I knew, I manage to sort things out and made a bomb out of it with my power of plot armored writing. Hehe...don't know why though.
The physical exam, yes. It's all about the measurement of our bodies and status before the adventure activities which includes exploration and combat training. While I was at it, I was with Marferd and our special guest, Ishei, a young girl with her samurai talents that surpasses the main goal of this exam, Gaval. He is no ordinary knight but a trickster that fools all enemies. We were lucky that we didn't get owned. Thanks for her help, we all passed.
When we return, we see Aquin and Heiya passed the exam with their smiles in. But our happiness runs dry the moment we did not see Baren return. What happened?
Back to the main story...
"What happened?" I ask Heiya and Aquin. We are waiting for either of them to answer. Marferd seems to worry about his little brother since they both trained together. I thought that I was helpful to either of them but how did this happen?
"Baren Nasumi...failed the adventures' exam," Heiya announces the bad news in front of us, especially in front of Marferd.
"Failed...!? But that's impossible! I saw Baren worked so hard on studying!" Marferd expresses his worry about his little brother. He loved him so much since the day as children with their parents. Heiya shook her head while explaining things further. "Heiya...how did this happen? Why did he have to fail?"
"He tried trying to get a passing grade at the knowledge exam, which he managed and it was more than 70%. However, he didn't do so well with firing against moving targets, including the elite targets that measure the agility and the sensory of dodging. The target from a far distance is the main part of passing the exam. That he lacked experience with shooting arrows in a distance, which his arrow cannot be this straight. Marferd, I'm sorry." Heiya pities Marferd's worried emotions, including Baren's sadness.
"It...can't be...!" Marferd collapses with his knees on the ground. A shocking depression that made him want to cry. What was Baren's dream that wanted to become an adventurer so bad?
"Marferd..." I pity Marferd including Baren who is not with us anymore.
Timeskip...
We went in separate ways while Marferd, Heiya, and Aquin are trying to go find Baren. While I start chatting with Ave since she wanted help with the current level of her class skills. We are both walking through the commercial district as we start chatting in the skit.
"..." I'm starting to feel disappointed and then depressed about what happened to Baren. No wonder that the exams can be this brutal.
"Y/n...are you ok?" Ave asks me with a worry.
Y/n: I'm fine. I'm so worried about hearing about Baren end up failing the final step of the physical exam. A target that is far away, including the one that is moving. How brutal does it get?
Ave: Very challenging for measurement of the range and arc movement of the arrow in longer distances. I guess that must be Baren's first time experiencing it.
Y/n: When did you pass the exam?
Ave: When I was 14. My first time was at 13.
Y/n: You're kidding.
