Chapter One: I'll Be Alright Without You

The hallowed halls of Bloomfield High School filled slowly as the morning of the first day began. Seniors and freshman alike gathered to meet with friends, seeing which classes they shared with one another.

Four girls, friends since the freshman year, made their way towards their meeting spot outside the south auditorium doors. They all stopped in front of each other and smiled at one another before they each took turns exchanging embraces. Because of their busy summers, the girls felt like they had barely seen each other all summer despite the various sleepovers. Each girl had a different story to tell, and one had a secret she was intent on keeping.

As the four made their way to their various first hours, and on their way to class, a football player made purposeful eye contact with one of the girls in the group. Julie Evans didn't let her beaming smile show through. She bowed her head and watched him walk off through the corner of her eye. She was hoping that her friends hadn't noticed so that she wouldn't be bombarded with questions about the boy she's had an on-off crush on for years. There was something she was hiding, and she had no intent on letting her friends know what it was. The last thing she needed was people talking about her in her senior year, she had made it so far in high school laying low, only being occasionally noticed for her talent in the school musicals. What she most definitely did not want was people finding out about the little secret that she and the boy had agreed to keep with each other. She couldn't even imagine the social disarray if people had found out about the school's most popular football player having a fling with the drama kid. That's why the secret would stay sealed shut behind her lips, even if it meant keeping it from her friends.

The conversation swirled around Julie as she was lost in thought. She picked the conversation as one of the three girls she considered her best friends, Vanessa D'Angelo, rambled on about who was busy after school and if they had time to shop for a homecoming dress with her.

"... I'm thinking about wearing pink for the dance. Do you think I should? Or is do you think that pink is out? Maybe I should wear black... that'd be elegant." She continued to talk.

Julie sighed, "I think that no matter what color you pick, you'll look stunning." She reassured her friend.

"So then you're coming with me?" She asked excitedly.

"Well..." Julie hesitated. She hoped that something would save her from having to go shopping with the homecoming equivalent of a bridezilla. And as if God himself was listening, Julie felt her phone buzz in her pocket, and she pulled out with a message from Matt Harvey, the football player that was caught in the web of her thoughts.

You and me, after school?

She read the message over and over again before responding "yes". She looked at Vanessa with an apology in her expression, "Sorry, I promised Tanner I'd come to visit him at work today." She frowned as authentically as she could, instantly drumming up a lie involving her twin brother.

Vanessa sighed, "Okay fine but will you at least come over later tonight? I want to hear about all of your summers!"

"Okay, I'll be there." Julie complied.
