Miller had left the girl at the house once more and when he returned, the whole team was waiting for an explanation from his part. He had to calm them down since they didn't look too excited for Miller's surprise. After at least forty five minutes of remaining silent while the others reproached things to him, Hunter raised his voice to speak all alone.
"Aren't you hurrying this decision?" He asked him. Miller shook his head slowly. "I understand she's going undercover. I see your point, who would suspect? But will she be able to defend him when the time comes? A specialized bodyguard would make everyone feel, well, safer about the kid's own security."
"Not to mention what that kid is going to say—"
"I trust Robin. Don't ask why, I just do." Miller said with a smile. "I was looking for someone without experience, so the Oak wouldn't be able to trace her. We've seen her files, she's a nobody. She doesn't look dangerous or suspicious. And about the defense part... well, like I told her, if her job's well done, then she will never have to face anyone. We could say it's temporary, until we solve things with the Oak and the kid's out of danger. Then, one of us will take her place and that's it."
"I don't know, you seem so sure that it gives me the creeps," Mansor stated. Some of the others laughed. Miller was in a good mood. "She's just a girl. It all makes no sense. To entrust his safety to a little girl..."
"That girl, and Ken's my witness, faced Lou's gang on her own."
Everybody's eyes opened widely. Ken, happy to be mentioned, began to nod enthusiastically.
"Hell yeah, I saw her! There were like eight or nine of them! They were trying to..." and he told them the whole story. Miller had done the right thing, because Ken had the talent of exaggerating stories in a believable way. Even though the rest still seemed negative about having her to take care of the kid, surely Ken's story would work in time. Miller thought, of course, that if he had had to find a bodyguard for Mrs. King, then the story would've been different. But with the kid, it was a different matter. This was just prevention. A pair of inoffensive eyes to take care of him.
Plus, the girl needed the money. And Miller kind of liked her.
"I still think you're hurrying." Hunter said once the others returned to their duties and Miller, Mansor, Ken and him were inside the kitchen with beers in their hands.
"I needed to find someone quickly before anyone could take advantage of the vulnerability of our situation. I had to find someone that wasn't involved with these businesses." Miller drank from his bottle. He felt happy after a few drinks. "The Boss would've agreed with me. She'll report if someone suspicious is around the kid, and we'll have them in our hands, and they won't even know who the tattletale is. You get it? I'm too brilliant."
"You could say she'll be an overprotective babysitter then, huh?" Ken said.
"That's how I see it." Miller affirmed. "A vigilant. Nothing more than that."
There was a dead silence until an old man entered the kitchen. His face was full of small scars, though there was one across his cheek that had turned him into a legend.
"You brought a duck into a pack of wolves, Miller." He growled with a very rough voice, proper from his age and personality. "If she dies, you'll pay for her blood, not us."
"She'll be fine," Miller said to Scars, which was the secret nickname that the team had invented for him with their lack of creativity. Scars was the fiercest of all of them, the one with most years in that place, and the personal bodyguard of Mrs. King, previously being Mr. King's. "Didn't you hear everything I said? She's got guts and she's clever."
