Chapter 42
Lost.

'Where am I..? Is this valhalla?' E/c eyes fluttered open, being met with a blinding white light. She tried to move her body, but she felt paralyzed, every muscle in her body aching. She heard people speaking and running around, but she couldn't make out any of the words being said.

Then for a moment again there was silence.

"Y/n." The familiar voice pulled Y/n out of her thoughts, it sounded like Askeladd.

'Askeladd?'

"Y/n...?" The voice repeated, this time it didn't sound like his. Her eyes adjusted, and she realized she was staring up at a ceiling. The voice that called out her name belonging to Canute.

Her mind registered that her body was laying on a bed, glancing over she saw the boy sitting at her bedside. The boy let out a huge sigh of relief, bending over he leaned towards the girl his bottom lip trembling slightly.

"Can you see me, hear me..?" Canute asked, unsure of what to say. His hand cupped her cheek tenderly, his heart leaping with joy feeling her warm skin. "Feel me?"

Y/n slightly furrowed her brows, nodding her head slowly. "What happened?" She asked Canute who paused for a moment.

"Do you not remember the events that happened two weeks ago?" His words stunned her, two weeks ago?

"No, I mean how am I alive..?" Y/n began, she already had a bunch of questions she needed to ask him. "And t-two weeks ago??" She blinked her eyes multiple times in pure confusion, especially when a sudden tear rolled down Canute's face.

"It's a miracle!" He raised his voice slightly as it cracked, wrapping his arms around the girl he pulled her up delicately to hug her body. Pulling his head out of the crook of her neck, he kept one arm wrapped around her body to keep sitting upright against him. Using his free arm he reached out to the water on the bedside table, holding the cup up his softly pressed it to the girls lips. "Drink some water, you must be thirsty..servants have already begun preparing you a meal."

Y/n took small sips of the water before pulling her head back slightly, gesturing that she had enough. Canute nodded his head, placing the cup back down on the table.

"Do you feel sick at all?" He asked her, concern and worry still painting his features. Y/n quickly shook her head, ready to start interrogating the boy, but she could tell he wasn't in the mood to answer questions. "Oh my god.." Canute's other arm returned around her body, now burying his head against her chest. Putting his head to the side against her chest, the sound of her heartbeat made his eyes water with tears of joy. "I can't believe it."

Feeling him tremble, Y/n wrapped her arm around him. When she did she couldn't help but notice the bandages going around the other side of her body where her arm used to be.

"Me neither." Y/n said with a small frown, she was positive that she would die in that moment. All the odds were stacked against her, she should've died of blood loss. Calling this a miracle would be an understatement. That day, two weeks ago, she surely should've passed on the ground beside Askeladd. She couldn't help but wonder if Askeladd had miraculously survived as well. Bringing up her lone hand, she placed her hand on top of Canute's head, letting it tangle in his blonde locks as she massaged his scalp. "Did Askeladd die..?"

"Yes." Canute's response was quick and short, Y/n blinking away her tears. "I'm sorry.."

"Don't apologize." Y/n chew the inside of her cheeks, shouldn't she be angry with Canute?

He was the reason why Askeladd was dead, he killed Askeladd.

All the same, it wasn't his fault. She knew Canute didn't want to kill Askeladd, he was left with no choice by Askeladd's actions. In order for their last resort plan to work, Canute would need to be the one to kill Askeladd.
