Chapter 40
Father

"You aren't my father?"

Y/n spoke in disbelief, furrowing her brows in denial. Just waiting for Askeladd to laugh and say this was one of his sick jokes. But she was met with silence, Askeladd holding eye contact with her. "It wasn't my illness that was going to kill me.. It was y-you?" Y/n gulped, eyes widening as she leaned back in her seat.

"I promised your mother I wouldn't let you go through the things she did.." Askeladd reached out a hand towards Y/n. He was reaching out to put his over hers that was laying on the table, but as soon as their skin made contact she quickly pulled her hand back.

"Don't." She spat, trying to blink back her tears. "Why couldn't you just tell me?"

"I wanted you to live a normal--"

"Nothing about my life is even fucking normal?!" She shot up from her seat, her face turning red in anger. Y/n was swift to wipe away the tear that ran down her cheek, "I-I--" Y/n sealed her lips after stuttering, struggling to even form a sentence. Closing her eyes she exhaled sharply out of her nose. She felt so angered, betrayed and saddened she had no clue what to say. Her head beginning to pound.

"Askeladd.. I hate you."

Askeladd averted eye contact, looking down into his empty cup. Y/n swiftly turned on her heels, running out of the building she just kept on running, running, and running.

Simply letting her feet take her anywhere.

Time seemingly went in slow motion as Askeladd knocked the cup out of the kings hands with his sword. Floki immediately commanding his men to attack, but he was too late.

In one swift hand motion, Askeladd took King Sweyn's head clean off of his body. His crown and head falling to the ground, his body following after. And everyone in the room sat paralyzed.

"Hah, that felt good." Askeladd spoke lightheartedly, breaking the silence but failing to ease the tension. "And now.." His eyes wondered up to make contact with the prince who stared at him blankly.

As the prince deciphered the scene in front of him, his face scrunched up and eyes hardened as he understood Askeladd's sacrifice.

'You have my gratitude, Askeladd!'

"Attack him men!!" Canute suddenly roared, "He has committed regicide!! Cut him down!"

Y/n frantically looked around, cursing herself for not carrying her sword with her today. But she was so confident that things would go well today, so she left her weapon behind.

Her eyes landed on the sword hanging on Gunnars waist and she frantically unsheathed it from his side. His eyes widened at her, but he could do nothing to stop the girl. The look on her face frightened him, so he didn't dare to raise his voice at her.

Just as Y/n was going to run to Askeladd's side as a man attacked him, her arm was suddenly grabbed tightly and halted her. Since she was in the motion of launching forward when her arm was suddenly grabbed to prevent her she nearly threw her shoulder out of it's socket.

Head immediately snapping in the direction of the man who held her back, she wasn't surprised when she saw that it was Thorkell who grabbed her arm with such strength. He dragged her along with him to stand in the front with the prince away from the bloodshed.

"Let me go!" She cried, her eyes falling back onto Askeladd who was fighting for his life. He effortlessly cut down the guards who dared to approach him. She felt her heart drop when a large group of men bursted through the doors with weapons directed at Askeladd, their intent not to retain but kill him.
