Chapter 44
Distanced

1 YEAR LATER

MERCIA, 1015

Y/n plunged her sword into a mans chest after jumping off of her horse, pulling it out she kicked his body down to the ground before swiftly turning around and taking the head of a man who attacked her from behind.

As two men raised theirs weapons at her at time swinging them horizontally in hopes of decapitating her, she dropped down swiftly crouching on her knees. Swiping her sword against one of the mans legs, taking them clean off causing him to fall; she sprung back up to impale the other.

"AAAAHH!" A man let out a battle cry as he charged towards her on his horse, Y/ns eyes widened slightly. Without hesitation she dropped her sword and grabbed the axe from one of the corpse. Throwing the weapon, it split the horses head causing it to fall forward. As the man riding the horse was launched forward suddenly, Y/n didn't have time to pick back up her sword from the ground.

She wasn't going to just stand there and let the man tackle her to the ground, so she simply stepped out of the way. As soon as his body met the ground her foot slammed down against his back to keep him from getting up. His face smushed in the mud, taking her only hand she pressed his head further into the ground; his body squirming as he desperately tried to get a breath of air.

As soon as his body went limp Y/n heard the foot steps of a man approaching her, she quickly grabbed the weapon the now deceased man was carrying. Lifting it in her defence, her sword clashed with the man who tried to cut her in half.

His strength was irrefutable, and as he added more pressure he forced Y/n down onto her knee. Her teeth grinding against each other as his sword came closer and closer to her face. In this battle of strength, with only one arm holding the sword Y/n was sure to lose. The man glared down at her as he pushed down harder, adrenaline pumping throughout his whole body giving him a boost of power.

If Y/n had her other arm applying force as well, she certainly wouldn't be in this predicament. But she couldn't let this be her downfall, Y/n had to think fast because in a couple of seconds she won't be able to think at all.

'What am I even fighting for?'

The negative thought suddenly crossed Y/n's mind. It wasn't as if she had a family to return home to, or people who were depending on her.

Or even a goal she was striving for.

Above her, the man's face broke out into a smirk when he noticed the sword she wielded was cracking.  Did the man know who Y/n was? Of course, her name was known across the land and feared after word of her thriving with one arm on the battlefield spread.

The thought of taking her head made pride swell in his chest, his heart pounding as he applied more pressure in hopes of breaking the sword.

Y/n noticed the sword cracking, and as she pushed up it was only making her dilemma worse as the sword cracked even more.  She was ready to accept her fate, prepared to give up as the cheap sword was meeting it's end.

But as her life flashed before her eyes, a single thought that crossed her mind was all it took.

When the sword broke, Y/n swiftly dodged the attack that would've easily ended her life. Turning her whole body to the side, the man missed her by only a hair. He was so close that his sword still cut her ear slightly.
