Chapter 61
Saved"So...This is where you've been sleeping all these years?" Y/n asked Thorfinn who she trailed behind while entering the barn.
Thorfinn nodded his head before pointing to the pile of hay at the back of the shelter.
"This is my bed, that one is Einars.." He nodded his head in the direction of the identical pile of hay. Einar had decided to stay back and watch over Arnheid as she slept, leaving the two of them to retire to the barn for the night.
"This is..."Y/n trailed off deep in thought as she looked around Thorfinn and Einar's home, unable to muster up words that weren't insulting to the living conditions Thorfinn and his friend had no choice but to endure. "Uhh..Nice.."
Thorfinn couldn't help but chuckle as he turned to face the girl.
"You're still a horrible liar." He commented earning a scoff from Y/n who believed his statement to be false.
"Me? Still? Horrible liar?" Y/n exaggerated a few words playfully acting as if she was offended. "Let's not forget you literally thought I was a boy for god-knows how many years."
"Deep down I knew--"
"All I'm hearing is false statement after false statement." Y/n cut the man off, walking over to the pile of hay belonging to Einar she let her body fall into it like a bed. Immediate regret filled her entire being when her weight fell through it, her bottom making harsh impact with the ground.
The surprised yelp followed by a loud thump made Thorfinn forced to slap his hand over his mouth to suppress his laughter.
"Stop laughing." Y/n weakly demanded, rubbing circles on her behind in hopes to ease the pain. Getting up, Y/n laid her body down on a more dense area of the stack of hay.
"I'm not even laughing," Thorfinn raised both his hands, feigning innocence. Walking over to his side of the barn he laid down facing Y/n.
Silence filled the barn for a moment, and the only sounds that could be heard was Y/n moving around trying to get comfortable. Tonight would be a huge adjustment for her, she'd be surprised if she were to get any sleep at all.
Not only was she trying to push the stress of the situation they were in to the back of her mind, she became so accustomed to living comfortably in Canute's residence laying in this stack of hay was very unpleasant.
Which is ironic because years ago she could sleep in the dirt with no problems or complaint, years ago she didn't even have the choice to lay in a bed.
'I've become spoiled.'
Y/n closed her eyes trying to force herself to fall asleep, unaware of the eyes that'd never left her uneasy facial expression once.
"Are you okay?" Thorfinn voiced his concerns, Y/n eye's fluttered opened to meet his brown ones.
"I'm fine..."
Thorfinn hummed in response, raising his inside hand he pressed it against his ear to rest his head on his palm. Even though Y/n was laying right across from him he felt like she was so far.
His eyes wondered her body before landing on her maimed arm, the words he so desperately wanted to voice rushing up his throat again.
"Y/n,"
"Yeah?"
His gaze moved off her arm and back up to her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
