Chapter 14
love/companionshipY/n sat down between Canute and Thorfinn, she turned her head back slightly to ease drop on the conversation the vikings were having.
"Hey Monk! You were at the palace weren't you? What kind of things does the king have there?" One of the vikings called out the priest which caught Y/n's full attention. Turning her body fully to face the men who were marching, she crossed her arms and placed them onto the ledge of the wagon before resting her head on them.
"Hmm.. nothing of particular value, I thought.." The priest answered as he scratched his dirty hairy, his answer made Y/n's brow furrow in confusion.
She of course imagined the king to have hundreds of beautiful women, as well as hundreds of barrels overflowing with gold and silver. Y/n wasn't the only one taken aback by the priest answer-- the viking immediately voiced their surprise.
"Whhhhaaaattt???!!" "NOTHING?" "No Women????"
Thorfinn saw Y/n's puzzled expression and was curious to see what had Y/n's attention. His eyes followed Y/n's then eventually fell onto the musty priest who spoke with a blank expression while clutching the small barrel he held between his lap.
"Oh, there was plenty of women slaves."
Y/n scoffed and this time raised her voice to speak making some heads turn towards her.
"You saying you've got no interest in women." She said while raising a brow, appearing not to be so surprised to here this coming from a priest. Ever since she was younger she never used to hear the greatest things about them. The other vikings nodded their heads agreeing with Y/n's comment.
"I've heard about you priest.." One of them added releasing a disappointed sigh.
The priest averted his eyes to make contact with Y/n.
"No, No." He turned down the statement, shaking his head, "compared to what I desire, riches and women hold no worth at all." He exaggerated making Y/n's smug expression turn to one of awe.
The other vikings felt the same, they desperately wanted to hear what was more valuable than riches and women.
Even Y/n was having a hard time trying to think of what could possibly mean so much more than riches and women-- so much so that money and women have no value when compared.
"Thorfinn are you able to guess what this guy's talking about?" Y/n asked the boy sitting beside her who only shrugged his shoulder.
"Don't know. The guy seems a bit crazy, he'll most likely spout some nonsense." Thorfinn replied with a bored expression.
"OooohHhhh!!" "Then tell us!" "What do you want!!?"
The vikings continued to push the subject, everything the priest saying to them leaving them more and more bemused.
The alcoholic priest ended up answering with one four letter word. Thorfinn rolled his eyes and turned back around, Y/n on the other hand was completely stunned.
A word she never said to anyone with proper intent, a word she only heard her father use once with true meaning.
A feeling she was deprived of, A feeling that she heard spoken so highly of.
