Chapter 64
Letting go (2)

He didn't want this to become a memory.

"Y/n, the hell are you doing here?" The smile that played on Canute's lips remained, not faltering in the slightest. "You were so against my plan you ran off with Ketil?" There was a joking tone in his voice much to Y/n's surprise, not expecting for him to speak to her so lightheartedly.

She opened her mouth to speak but no words came out, she ended up looking like a blobfish.

"Are you alright?" Canute's voice lowered slightly, Y/n nodding her head right after the question fell from his lips.

"So? Are you going to use your words and explain to me why you're here?" The blonde rephrased his question, raising a brow in anticipation.

It was so evident that Canute was elated to see Y/n.

The entire trip to the farm along with the time he spent standing on the soil not a single expression crossed Canutes features. But as soon as his eyes landed on Y/n his entire face lit up.

He had to keep his composure, he couldn't act on his impulsive thoughts that were begging him to just wrap his arms around her in a bone crushing hug.

"Thorfinn--" Y/n had an entire sentence mapped out in her mind that she repeated over and over again and Thorfinn's name was nowhere in there; but his name just slipped out.

"Thorfinn is here," She breathed out, there was a flicker of dolour in Canute's blue eyes. His lips were sealed in a smile, almost as if he were expecting to hear words along those lines.

No, it wasn't that...

It was like he'd been preparing himself for this moment, so much so that now that the scenario that only occurred in his mind was playing out in reality he was able to stomach the news.

"So you and him were finally reunited," this was so bittersweet, Canute didn't know wether he should be feeling sorry for himself or-- "I'm happy for you."

Y/n felt her eyes beginning to glaze over, when Canute spoke all of his words sounded so genuine.

She could tell he meant every word he said, Canute was genuinely happy for her.

Didn't he know what this meant for the two of them? This is it.

"Canute--" Y/n was all chocked up, her voice cracking as the damn broke. Her cheeks became wet with warm tears that were falling quickly from her e/c eyes. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." She shook her head, the smile on Canutes face wasn't as wide anymore.

The now small smile on his face didn't convey happiness anymore.

"Why're you crying?" He stepped closer to Y/n, not hesitating to bring his hands to cup her face--knowing this was the last time he'd get to hold her like this. Wiping away her tears with his thumbs, he took in every detail of how her smooth skin felt under the pads of his fingers.

He so desperately needed to lock this into his mind forever, but he knew one day he would forget the feeling.

While he may forget how her face feels in his palms, he'll never forget the way it made him feel.

The butterflies that went wild in his stomach, his cheeks that grew warm.

There was no use in stressing over forgetting, he needed to just live in the moment.

Because at this moment it felt like the entire world was standing still, and she was the only thing that mattered.

"I should've never led you on, that was so fucking selfish." Y/n apologized from her heart, confession the words Canute deserved to hear before she ran away.
