i don't know how to write only praise or only degradation, you gotta have the double whammy (maybe it's emotional manipulation throughout childhood normalizing praise/degradation oscillation, maybe it's maybelline 😘)

i know i switch between present and past tense SO FAST all the time i'm sorry it's just so weird when it's in second person 😩

They left on Monday night and returned on Saturday night, and Emily got home ten minutes before JJ did. She'd been on a case since Thursday, off in Delaware, though it wasn't too far. Henry was in bed, and you were laying on the couch reading. You hadn't found much time to read since you'd been back at work after Lake Placid.

We glide together through the darkening streets. The Commander has hold of my right hand, as if we're teenagers at the movies. I clutch the sky-blue cape...

The door shut. "Hey, sweetheart, it's me," you heard her say.

"Hi." Emily leaned over the couch, and you tilted your head back so she could kiss you. "How was the case?"

"Fine. Henry?"

"Oh, he's good." Emily came around to sit with you, and ended up laying sort of behind you with her head on your belly. You stroked her hair while you closed your book. "Are you tired, my love? You look tired." She nodded and turned her head slightly to lazily kiss your belly, too worn out to move much more than that. "I'm glad you're back, angel,"

"Glad to be back." She snuggled into you and tried to fall asleep. When JJ came in, you smiled.

"Hey," she greeted warmly, dark circles around her eyes. "Oh, hey," she whispered in correction. She had seen that your wife was sleeping. "How have you been?"

"Good. Henry was...a delight, of course. Em just got home from a case in Delaware. Kid's in bed, he's long asleep,"

"Oh, awesome. Thank you so much for doing this, Y/N,"

"Of course. Will go back to his apartment?" She nodded and held her hands up.

"I know, I know, you don't approve. I'm just not in the mood for a lecture right now." You let her finish before smiling.

"I don't want to lecture you. Just...do what's best for you, JJ." You made an effort to get up without waking Emily, but JJ stopped you.

"Let her sleep," she laughed. You smiled and thanked her as she went to see her son. Emily muttered after JJ left, trying to roll over.

"Hey, Ems, you wanna get into bed?"

"Hmm?"

"Yeah, okay..." A valiant effort was made to carry her.

"Put me down," she demanded in her best sarcastic, sleepy-angry voice. Emily could always make you smile. Only your hand remained on her when you led her into the guest bedroom for one last night. You went out to see JJ and let her know.

"Hey, is it okay if we stay just for tonight? We're both tired, and I wanna say 'bye' to Henry in the morning—"

"Y/N, don't even worry about it. You guys are family, of course you can stay." She loved so dearly. Jennifer Jareau was the best family anyone could ask for.

The next morning, when you went home, the both of you were quiet in the car until you got close to your place. "Ems?" As she's driving, she only takes her eyes off the road for a moment. "You're lovely."

Emily finds her smile. Two words, just 'you're lovely', turned her morning into something a little brighter. "Can I...you don't know how much your words mean to me, my love." She puts her hand on the back of your neck while the other stays on the steering wheel. "I am so in love with you."
