I was in complete shock. It was like everything was happening in slow motion but at the same time, it happened so fast. My mom was staring at us like she was seeing an alien invasion. It was like she didn't believe it but all of a sudden it must have clicked in her head what was happening because anger washed over her face.
"Get away from my son," Her voice was like ice.
"Mom-," I tried to reason.
"Shut up," She snapped. I was in complete shock...she had never spoken to me like that before. For some reason...I wasn't freaking out. I think today was so emotionally exhausting that I physically couldn't freak out.
"Please...I can explain-," I tried to reason with her.
"I don't want to hear it," She stormed over but I stood in front of Austin protectively, "Alan...in the house, now."
"No," I replied bravely.
"Alan," She warned me, "Do as I say."
"No," I repeated, "You're not giving me a chance or Austin-."
"Don't tell me who I should give a chance!" She warned, "I told you to stay away from him but instead I find you...kissing him?! What-I mean-you...are you-?"
"Gay?" I finished for her before nodding.
She was just confused. She didn't seem angry...well, not at me anyway.
"You," She pointed to Austin, "You did this. You corrupted my son-."
"Don't be ridiculous!" I snapped at her, "I knew I was gay long before I met Austin!"
"I'm not talking about being gay!" She snapped, "You've been dating a murderer! You've been kissing a killer! Those hands have taken away people's lives-."
I glanced at Austin for the first time to see that he looked absolutely devastated and hurt. I felt anger rise in me like it never has before.
"SHUT UP!" I screamed at her, "Just shut up! You know absolutely nothing! He's not a murderer! You have no idea what actually happened! If you would just listen-!"
"Don't tell me to listen!" She argued before sighing in exasperation, "Who are you? My son would have never spoken to me like that..."
That stung but I answered, "Yeah, well my mom would have given me a chance to explain myself."
She looked at me like she didn't believe what she was seeing. But she'd let me down too...she was being unreasonable.
Austin grabbed my hand, "Alan maybe I should-."
"No," I replied, "You're staying."
"Over my dead body," My mom replied.
"You can't do-," I started to argue.
"Laura?" My dad's head suddenly popped out of the door so he could look at us, "What's going on?"
"Your son is dating a murderer," My mom told him bitterly.
"Stop calling him that!" I snapped at her.
"Woah, woah...hang on," My dad stepped out, "Can someone explain to me what's going on?"
He looked at me before looking at Austin. He obviously didn't recognise him because he was just giving him this confused expression.
I decided to explain before my mom could jump in, "Dad...I-I'm gay."
My dad looked at me for a few moments before finally registering what I was saying. His expression changed from confusion to shock but overall...it was mainly just like he was trying to come to terms with it. He finally evened out his expression before nodding.
