I had begun to trail behind the boys as they talked amongst themselves and I took in the scenery around me. The school was pretty much surrounded by forest, which I had begun to notice was like most of this town, acting as a kind of shield against the outside world.  I wasn't used to this kind of surrounding, certainly not where I used to live. It felt protective.

"Katherine, we're here." I shook my head slightly, coming back to reality.

"Sorry, must have zoned out for a second there. Thank you for helping me out, I really appreciate it." I gave them both a smile.

"It's okay, anytime." They both shot me grins and went their own way whilst laughing and knocking in to each other.

I hung around outside the office. I still had 10 minutes before classes were supposed to start. I sat on one of the many seats provided and grabbed my phone from my book bag. I scrolled through Facebook, which became boring very quickly, and moved on to Instagram, then checked if I had any texts before my phone was pushed out of my hand. I let out a small gasp in shock, looking up at the intruder, only, there was nobody there, but there was definitely someone at my feet groaning in pain.

"Hey, are you okay?" It was a thin, tan girl. She was holding her head whilst propping herself up with her other arm.

"Yes, sorry, I'm fine, I just always manage to trip over my feet. I'm really sorry, let me grab your phone." She took her hand off of her head to reveal an already darkened bruise.

"Jesus, you need to go to a nurse or something, you have those here right, your head is really bad." I made a move to reach for her at the same time she was handing me my phone, and we almost collided, until our eyes connected and she stopped dead in her tracks.

"Here, let me help you up" I offered my hand for assistance.

"No, no, it's okay, I can get up myself. Don't worry about me."

"Please, let me help you." She looked at me once more and took my hand, stumbling as she got up.

"Point me in the direction of the nurse and we can head there together" The bruise had me worrying that she wouldn't make it there alone, but she didn't respond, she just stared at me.

"What was your name?" I felt like I had to handle her like a deer in headlights, If i frightened her she would run away.

"Alexandra, Alex for short. Really, I'm okay, classes start soon anyway, I'll be fine." She gave me a small smile before running off, literally.

I was bewildered and curious as to why she was acting in such a way. Maybe she was like me, unable to socialise, especially when she had just made what she probably thought was a fool of herself. I sat back down on the seat for a couple of seconds, playing over the events that had transpired. I didn't think being the new kid was that bad, or at least bad enough for someone to feel the need to run away from me. It was odd.

The bell rang suddenly, shrill and disturbing, so I opened the door to the office.

"Hey there love, how are ya?" She seemed like a sweet old lady, too nice to be working in a high school with bratty children, I guess that's where she got her few grey hairs from.

"I'm Katherine Chambers. I just needed to grab my schedule, I think that was all anyway." I laughed nervously as I ran my fingers through my slightly tangled hair, unsure of myself.

"Ah yes, here you go. Now, your first class isn't too far from here, but you might be a little late, and the old bat that runs the class isn't too friendly, so you best be on your way. Oh! And before I forget, I included a map of the school in amongst the paperwork, I think it's at the bottom. I figured it might help a little." She gave me a short laugh and bid me a good day as I walked out of the office.
