I trudged down the staircase, cursing under my breathe with each step that I took. My car keys dangled in left hand ever so slightly, whilst my other hand held the staircase railing, it groaned as I applied most of my weight and strength, I feared if I didn't I would fall down the stairs. I was met with the sight of my parents giggling quietly with each other whilst making some eggs and bacon.
"Can you guys just quit it for one morning, I mean god, get a room." My mum's eyes lingered in my direction, before breaking out of whatever trance she was in and swatted my dad away, laughing as she did so.
"I will not apologise for showing your beautiful mother some affection. God knows she deserves it." I made a gagging noise but proceeded towards the dining table.
Breakfast had already been served up, which was strange, my parents were probably trying to butter me up before school, knowing how hard this was. I had tried to ask my dad why we were moving, but it was always the same, terrible answers, 'because we have to', 'it'll be better for us'. They were all meaningless lies. I moved in for the pancakes first, placing one on my plate and making a move to get some butter, before it had been swiped.
"Jesus Kohl, it wasn't like I was about to use that."
My brother paraded the pancake in his mouth before taking a seat in front of me laughing.
"I'll give it back if you go and get changed, you know I hate that dress." I scoffed and proceeded to grab another pancake.
"Xavier, please tell our little sister that she needs to go and get changed." I turned around looking for Xavier as I hadn't seem him when I first walked in.
"Kohl, grow up, she can wear what she wants." I followed the voice to see Xavier in our connected lounge room sitting on a chair reading the newspaper and drinking some coffee.
Xavier had always been the more mature brother of the two, he was still young, 22 in fact, but he had an old soul, he was never one to go out and party all night and sleep all day. Whereas Kohl, being 21, was the complete opposite.
"Thank you Xavier, at least someone sees some sense." I gave a sideways glance to Kohl before eating my pancake.
"What are you two going to do all day anyway?" Both of my brothers had finished school, never went to college, and didn't have jobs. They always had their friends back home though, so there was always something to do, but now there was nothing at all.
"I have some pack work to attend to, so that'll take me all day." I heard Kohl's fork clatter behind me as I turned to look at Xavier.
"Pack work?" I really had no idea what he was talking about, but I had to question why everyone had just about shat themselves at what Xavier had said, it was confusing.
"Yes, pack working, packing work, packing things in to boxes." He smirked at me before taking a sip of his coffee, I brushed it off. I didn't even know he'd gotten a job.
I grabbed my phone from my dress pocket, looking at the time, 20 minutes before school started.
"Shit, I have to go. School starts soon. What an impression I would make if I was late on my first day." I quickly inhaled what was left of my food before grabbing my book bag and making my way towards the door.
"Be careful okay, don't talk to any boys." Xavier's look was stern as he gave me the warning, he acted like a second father sometimes.
"Damn it, how did you know that I was attempting to get laid on the first day?" I cackled and winked at Xavier, bolting out the front door and shouting a goodbye.
I arrived to school in 5 minutes, I was much closer than I thought, which gave me more time to figure out where the office was. I stopped at what I assumed was a recreational area to look for any signs pointing towards the office. None. Just my luck. There weren't many students hanging around at this time either, I'm assuming they all arrived just on time. I headed to my right and there were a few kids playing catch, maybe they could help me out. I made my way towards them slowly, trying to take in my surroundings, making sure I remembered which direction I was heading so I didn't get lost. I approached the guys quicker than I thought and was more than unprepared to ask them for help.
"Uh, hey.. hello?" I hadn't gotten anyones attention, I had only been successful when the the guy on the other side spotted me and motioned to his friend that I was standing right next to him.
The guy turned around, his eyes cast high as he surveyed his surroundings, before looking down and spotting me and giving me a smile.
"Hey there, how can I help you?" He was awfully nice compared to the usual jock stereotype that I had mentally pinned to him.
"Hey, sorry, I'm new, I'm just trying to find the office." I gave him a small smile back.
"Yeah no problem, what's your name?" He started to walk towards me slightly, still holding his smile.
"Katherine Chambers." His smile dropped and he rubbed his palms against his jeans.
"Shit, sorry I didn't see you there. I can take you to the office myself, it's really no trouble at all." I hadn't noticed that his friend had also come and joined us, nodding along to what his friend was saying.
"Sorry, what was your name?" I kept my tone light, but couldn't help but feel confused at his sudden mood change.
"I'm Noah, and this is my friend Jaxon." Jaxon nodded his head slighty, his features now serious.
"Sorry, could you just point me in the direction of-"
"Right, sorry, like I said, we'll take you there ourselves." The seriousness began to fade as I continued to smile at them, mustering up small smiles of their own.
I slid my book bag back on to the shoulder it had been slipping off of and followed Noah and Jaxon towards the office.
