AFTER THE HALLOWEEN FEAST, Athena found herself escorting students back up to their common rooms. There was a general chatter of excitement for the upcoming quidditch match in the next few days.

Athena wasn't paying much attention, she was walking behind a large group of Gryffindor's including Harry, Ron and Hermione. Her head was hurting. There was a pain right in the centre of her forehead and for the time being this was all she could concentrate on.

As they approached the corridor of Gryffindor tower, Athena noticed that everyone had stopped walking. There was some kind of commotion going on near the portrait hole.

Athena looked up in confusion, over the heads of the Gryffindor students who were all talking loudly in overlapping voices so that Athena couldn't hear a word that anyone was saying.

"Why isn't anyone going in?" said Ron curiously.

The portrait seemed to be closed.

"Let me through, please," came Percy's voice, and he came bustling importantly through the crowd. "What's the hold-up here?"

"You can't all have forgotten the password – excuse me, I'm Head Boy –"

And then a silence fell over the crowd, from the front first, so that a chill seemed to spread down the corridor.

They heard Percy say, in a suddenly sharp voice, "Somebody get Professor Dumbledore. Quick."

Athena pushed forwards in immediate concern. Students moved out of the way for her as they talked in low and fearful whispers. Making it to the front of the crowd, Percy turned to her white in the face.

"Professor" he gasped out, pointing to the portrait of Elizabeth. However there was no sign of the woman anywhere. The Fat Lady had vanished from her portrait, which had been slashed so viciously that strips of canvas littered the floor; great chunks of it had been torn away completely.

Athena ran her hand over the slashes of the painting in shock. A great foreboding had rushed through her as she looked around at the other portraits for any sign of Elizabeth.

Next moment, Professor Dumbledore was there, sweeping towards the portrait; the Gryffindors squeezed together to let him through.

"Oh, my –" Hermione exclaimed.

There were more running footsteps and Athena turned to see McGonagall, Remus and Snape hurrying onto the scene. Dumbledore gazed at them with somber eyes, his gaze also travelling along the paintings up the walls.
