"And the culprit... are you!"
Shinichi aimed a finger at a woman close by, earning the gasps of several people around them. Kaito smiled- he had seen it coming for a while.
"You knew about the deal the victim made with the staff, you knew she was going to have them quit all at once to join her restaurant."
Shinichi smiled, cold and calculated. He had figured it all out. Two officers stepped closer to the woman, frowning, ready to put handcuffs onto her. She took a step back, eyes wide, making an impression of a caught animal.
"Outrageous!! I would never be able to do such a thing to a living human being! My staff is loyal to me, too! Why would I do that?"
Shinichi smiled, Kaito watched him intently. His eyes were glued to his lips, awaiting, intrigued to hear his answer.
"Oh, is that so?" Shinichi took a step closer. "If you have nothing to hide, please open your bag and show us what's inside."
The woman frowned, yet opened her bag without any complaints. Almost taunting, she stretched it out towards the detective, lips curling up into a smug smile.
"I have nothing to hide. Whatever you expect to find, you won't see it in there."
"Is that so? What do we have here?"
Holding up the eyecontact, Shinichi's hand slipped into the bag and retrieved a lipstick.
"It's a lipstick! What's so bad about a woman carrying a lipstick in her purse?!"
A chuckle. Shinichi twirled the lipstick in his gloved hand.
"I can tell you. How come you are carrying a lipstick with you, while not wearing lipstick yourself? No... the colour doesn't suit you in the slightest either."
"Excuse me?!"
"-However... it suits the victim just well. In fact, it looks disturbingly similar to the one she is wearing right now."
Shinichi turned and walked back towards the booth the victim had fallen from.
"I was wondering... Why exactly did she die in this very moment? There was no sign of any organ failure, and the soup wasn't poisoned either. Not even the spoon. No..."
He flashed a smirk back at the woman and Kaito shivered, then shook his head and turned forcefully away. He remembered that grin far too well on his moonlighting nights.
"Just before sitting down, I know she went into the bathroom. I was here, after all. When she returned, there was a new layer of lipstick on her lips. The poison used to kill her was hidden inside the lipstick, becoming active the moment she ate something and it came in contact with her saliva."
Scoffing, the woman crossed her arms, not backing down. This was ridiculous.
"I forgot the lipstick in my bag overnight. And how, Mr Detective, was I able to get the lipstick back if she applied it herself in the bathroom? As you probably saw, I was at the other end of the restaurant."
"Easy."
Shinichi's gaze switched to a man, smirk unwavering.
"You had help. This young man here... presumeably the husband of this young lady here... stole the lipstick from her purse admidst the chaos and gave it to you. The two of you have an affair... you wanted to merge your two rival restaurants together, under one leadership, and she was in the way, wasn't she?"
Shinichi mimicked a pityful expression as he loomed over the man, disturbingly sweet.
"She would have never given you the restaurant. She would have never signed it over to her best enemy. She had her own plans of ruining the competition, didn't she? Luring all the employees away from the competition... And you knew about it... so you told her, the women you have an affair with behind your wife's back. You two hatched a plan... wasn't that right?"
The man, trembling by now, avoided Shinichi's eyes like the plague.
"Shut your mouth..." the woman warned, gritting her teeth. "Oh, you don't have to say anything," Shinichi replied nonchalantly and handed the lipstick to Megure-keibu to secure it, "I'm sure, once we send in the lipstick to be analyzed... not only the victim's fingerprints are going to be on it, but both of yours as well."
Kaito smiled proudly over to the detective, warmth pooling into his stomach. Exactly how he remembered him, confident and clever. That was all it took for the two suspects to be handcuffed and led away, and finally, Kaito was permitted to leave the crime scene.
"Geesh what a day..."
Kaito had his arms crossed behind his head, comfortably strolling home. His company, as usual, didn't say a word.
"What, are you still scared? C'mon, it's gonna be fine." Kaito shot him a wink and the boy froze, then blushed and smiled back at him. He found he liked the smile of the mysterious boy.
"I'm glad we had some food tho... I am not exactly in the mood to make dinner. Ah, and I gotta plan the new heist as well!"
Kaito threw his arms into the air in the most dramatic way possible, starling the boy, who responsed with a soundless chuckle.
Back at home, Kaito was glad to throw his coat over the chair close by and flop down onto the couch like a starfish, groaning.
"And tomorrow it's back to school again... God dammit..."
His cheeks puffed into the pout as he looked up at him, into those curious eyes, and he snorted.
"You're adorable, you know that? I need some chocolate... want something, too?"
Not expecting an answer, Kaito made his way towards his fridge. He liked to store his chocolate in there, he stood for his opinion that chocolate tasted best cold and hard.
He pulled out a chocolate bar and handed it backwards towards the boy, then took one himself, only to turn around and saw him munching on the wrapper as well.
Oh come on.
Kaito snorted and shook quickly his head, then held up his bar and slowly peeled the wrapper off, before taking a bite off of the brown candy.
Slowly, he could see the realization dawning upon him, and under chuckling he saw him slowly spitting out the wrapper before trying it again.
At least he found out that what comes outta the fridge is food.
