Sitting on one of the large containers, a coffee cup in hand, the detective and the thief watched the moonlight in content silence. With the police coming soon after, it had been a piece of cake delivering Hope into an asylum... into a soundproof cell, of course.
"The hope of humanity..." Shinichi mused thoughfully, "Are we really meant to be this insane...? If you think about it, Hope should represent the most part of humanity..."
Kaito let out an acknowledging hum, a sip of his coffee. Too much milk and sugar for Shinichi's taste, but he let him have it this time.
"Perhaps we are. Insane enough to commit daily crimes, thrown your way to solve... Insane enough to moonlight as a thief~"
Chuckling, Kaito accepted that disapproving hit into his shoulder. Shinichi retracted his fist, finally moving his gaze away from the night sky.
"I'm serious, KID. It's... disappointing to know. A being akin to a god, with the ability to counter disease and bacteria... and instead of using his powers for good, he lost his sanity."
"He became greedy and power-hungry," Kaito nodded along, gesticulating a little with his mug, "That usually happens. While he may be an entity of far greater power... The hope he carries makes him human, connects him to us. Humans... get bored. Start experimenting."
Shinichi shot him a gauging glare, receiving a laugh in return from the thief. Gosh, not like that.
"Oh come on Meitantei, you know I don't approve of what he did. But... I can follow his trail of thought."
Taking a swig of his mug, Kaito used that as a tiny pause inside his speech.
"Could you imagine? A life with endless possibilities... eternal life."
"We have endless possibilities, KID. We might not have as much time as Hope and Pandora seem to have... But our possibilities are just as endless."
Shinichi was staring at Kaito with an indescribable look inside his eyes, falling silent again. Kaito could sense he wanted to say something but didn't exactly know how to phrase it.
"What do you want to say, Meitantei?"
Shinichi hesitated for another moment, then turned his gaze away and back to the nightsky once more.
The hope to accomplish anything and everything... and the will to do so...
"KID, I... if you need someone to talk, I'm here."
The young thief tensed for a moment. Right. Shinichi had seen him raise his own gun at himself.
"I am very much alright. Are you worried about me~?"
"KID, stop it. Look me in the eye and tell me that you're fine, almost suiciding out of this life."
Kaito clenched his fist, then relaxed it again.
"...nearly everyone went for murder, wasn't that exactly what Hope said?"
"But not you! KID, you're better than this. Far better. And I'd rather keep a few secrets than watch you end it like this."
Shinichi reached out and took his hand into his, sensing the thief was about to make his escape.
"What happens outside of heists is of no significance to the case of Kaitou KID, to me."
"I'm not suicidal, if that's what you want to say, Meitantei."
Kaito pulled his hand away, slowly distancing himself from the detective once more.
"It's true that I wish to end it all. But... not this way. Hope made me go for the fastest possible way, that doesn't reflect my own decisions."
Kaito stood up from his spot, emptying his coffee cup and looking down at his company with a fond smile.
"I would leave far too much behind."
Kaito bowed to the detective, a cloud of smoke enveloping him to reveal his brilliant white costume beneath.
"It was a welcome truce, detective. However, I must take my leave now... I ensure you Pandora is in good hands, with me."
A snap of his fingers, and Shinichi had to shield his eyes from the large flash KID produced.
The moment his eyes stopped watering, KID was already out of sight.
Shinichi let out a soft hum and shook his head, favoring his seat for a while longer. He knew KID wasn't lying to him about this... it felt good to know that he wasn't as depressed as Hope made him look like. Smiling to himself, Shinichi leaned back onto the surface, enjoying the soft flutter of warmth inside his stomach.
KID smiled from his hiding place, watching Shinichi with a satisfied expression.
"Let's go, Pandora... Let's go home."
Turning away, Kaito led the young male further from Shinichi, before unceremoniously taking the bus home, now in far less fancy clothes than his white suit.
Pandora could sense his friend being somewhat troubled, and gave Kaito a gentle and reassuring nudge to his arm.
"Hey hey, I'm fine. I just..."
Kaito paused. He knew Pandora couldn't understand him anyway, but exactly because of that maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to let his thoughts lose.
"...I just wonder... when Hope had us charmed... what exactly was Meitantei trying to accomplish, tackling me onto the ground?"
Kaito could barely remember through his own haze of intoxication, but the look of victory and satisfaction on Shinichi's face the moment he had had him pinned spoke more than a thousand words.
Kaito buried his face into his hands with a dramatic sigh, cheeks warm and red.
Ah, what was his luck again.
Pandora nudged him once more, and Kaito finally started laughing, hugging the lad with a happy smile on his face. Said one seemed just as content, glad that Kaito was doing fine again.
"I'm soooo tired... I'm going to bed straight away."
Pandora just nodded along. It felt good to be home again, with his best friend, feeling comfortable.
The moment Kaito was home again, he first of all inspected Pandora from head to toe... frowning only worse when he discovered all those blue marks on his wrists from Hope dragging him all over the place.
"What an annoying brat..." Kaito mumbled, ushering the boy towards the couch to go to sleep.
He wouldn't forgive Hope so fast.
Not that he would see him again so soon... Shinichi had made sure of that.
Smiling to himself, Kaito turned off the lights in his own room.
Yeah... Shinichi...
