Gena and Max kept the windows rolled up which made me wanna gag from the alpine air freshener that was complete overkill. They were clearly doing everything they could to hide their scent.
Both of them were on edge about being here. While having to come all the way from Seattle probably didn't help, it was clear that it was largely the chance of confronting the pack that was eating at them more than anything.
Nancy had only gotten more aggressive since becoming alpha. While I do wish she'd lighten up a bit, I know in many ways she needs for it to be clear who's in charge. The slightest weakness could lead to a number of challenges even among her own pack. What happened with Amber's boyfriend was a clear example of it. I found myself wondering how many more was lining up. More than a few I imagine. Perhaps I could use this.
"She's at your trailer? Where's that?
"Take the main road right through Langhurst. About 16 miles out of town there's an old bridge on the right, cross it, then follow the road to where the pavement ends. Take the turn off and follow that road a few miles till it splits. It can be tough to spot, you'll wanna go right. If we hit the river you've gone to far."
"Why can't you call her and have her meet us?" Gena demanded.
"Getting a signal isn't always easy there. She's also got a mate and it's working out far better than the relationship I have with mine so even if she did have a phone that worked, I don't think there would be much chance in her answering, do you?"
Gena and Max was huffing and puffing but knew there wasn't anything they really could do. I knew I was risking a lot with this tactic as if they caught on I'd be in serious trouble. So far they seemed clueless confirming my suspicions.
The old logging road wouldn't be kind to this van and with a little luck they might even get stuck. The road was terrible during the day, at this time of night it would be worse but I needed to buy some time until Nancy was likely to drop Amber off. So far they didn't seem to notice the scenic route that I was taking them on.
The woman to my left gave me a glance making me sure she knew what I was doing. I waited on held breath for her to say something but she didn't. When Gena started bombarding me with questions on Nancy's pack I was finally able to take a breath.
Did she really think I'd tell her anything? She was asking me everything. Most of which, I honestly didn't know, like how many she had in her pack, who her Beta was, where they all were located. Someone really ought to tell this bitch that I have just gotten back from living in Seattle. How should I know most of this? Nancy sure as shit hasn't volunteered.
I should've been scared. Any normal person in my position would've been. Instead, the more we drove the more pissed off I was becoming. Twenty bucks says I can guess where she found these two next to me and if she found the other three the same way, I wouldn't be surprised. Josh dying didn't even faze her or Max other than the fact it could lead to them.
Max's eyes locked onto mine through the review mirror. "You travel all this way everytime you run out of milk?" He asked not taking his eyes off me.
"I don't really drink milk. Energy drinks mostly. But yes, it's all apart of the territory. You know what's that's like don't you?"
Like hell he did. He didn't have a clue- neither of them did. His eyes squinted angered by the challenge
"WATCH OUT!" Gena yelled
He swerved just missing the animal as it ran out in front of us. He should've just braked. The van went off the narrow road, scrapping could be heard as the underside was assaulted by rocks, gravel, and anything else in the way before crashing into a large tree.
