Just after three in the morning bright headlights shot through the living room window like spotlights. It was about time. Trust Jake to take three times longer than necessary for anything.
I slipped my shoes on noticing my head was far clearer than it should be after the amount of wine I drank. It was a good thing, I figured I was about to need it.
I took one more look out the window half expecting the truck to be surrounded by the pack. I knew Nancy had them watching the place even if they tried staying out of view. I was relieved to see that was still the case. Jake was doing the same as I stepped outside into the cold, our breaths visible.
"You?! You're a part of all this? I...I thought I was Jake's mate."
Amber said as she got out causing Jake to pinch the bridge of his nose as if he had a headache. I could only imagine what the drive back was like for him. I gave him a somewhat sympathetic smile.
"Maybe you are. If that's the case, you have my sympathy. His past three relationships haven't ended very well and he snores. Let's hope that his claim was just a good way to get you away from your mom and Gena. You're welcome by the way. Want some coffee? Something to eat?" I asked, ignoring her confrontational tone.
"Would you fuckin not start? I've already had a shitty day." Jake said under his breath.
"I don't need you interfering in my life! I sure don't need you dragging me across the damn country!
"Already? Hmmm... well then, good luck. The bus station is about four miles that way" I said sarcastically as I pointed to the east. "The bus stops off at the Best Western once a day. Not sure about the time. Oh! They don't sell tickets there. You'll have to pick one up in Lakeside."
She looked around flabbergasted. A bit of guilt shot through me before vanishing as quickly as it came. After that little stunt she pulled in Seattle, she deserves a little payback.
"What do you think, Jake, fifty yards?"
She looked between us from underneath her long red bangs trying to figure out what I meant. Jake had no trouble.
"How badly did Nancy take the news?" He asked with a satisfying grin.
"She threw her phone against the wall when you didn't pick up. They've been circling the property all night. Judging by how terrible of a job they did at being stealthy, I'm sure Sasha has to be one of them."
"Ah shit! That explains why I couldn't get back to her. I dropped the damn phone when I tried to answer and it fell under the seat. Did you tell her I was driving?" The satisfying grin now gone.
"I did. Don't worry."
"The way she rambles on I'd say twenty if granted a headstart if our ex is around she won'tmake twenty steps."
"Your ex!" I corrected the asshole.
"What are you two talking about?" Amber inquired as she hugged herself from the cold. She was already shivering so even without the others I have no idea how far she'd think she'd get before freezing to death.
"Well darling, this isn't Seattle. The alpha here doesn't let her member go wherever. She keeps close tabs on them. She also isn't very happy about you being here and she's definitely not happy about Jake being here . If you have any ideas about running away again, I'd highly advise you to forget them. But hey, you really wanna try your luck then be my guess. Tell your mom and Gena I said hi."
"What about my mom? If you think a pack will stop her-"
"I do. Nancy isn't going to allow vampires to roam around here causing problems. There's also no Grave Watchers here she could run to. She comes looking to cause problems she'll get more than she bargained for. Things here might be a bit rough at the moment but you'll be safe as long as you stay put. I'm trying to help you. If you really don't want it, then I'll stop wasting my time."
