Why the fuck does this keep happening to me? All I want is to have a normal life. Find a steady job, get knocked up by some deadbeat who dumps me right afterwards for my sister or best friend, learn my lesson and run back to Dobby and live happily ever after. Was that to much to ask for? What's with all the werewolves and vampires?
I folded my arms turning to Gena letting her know I didn't appreciate any of this. "So you are one of them. I figured as much. I'm assuming you have a reason for this."
"Let's have some drinks, shall we?" She headed inside without another word with Max right along with her. I took a moment to get myself together before following.
Aside from the length, the trailer wasn't much bigger than mine. The living room was only about twice the size of mine back in Idaho, which might seem big, but JoAnn gave it to me because I was flat broke and homeless. Gena seemed to have a fair amount deal of money Judging by how she always dresses. Maybe it was just for show, but I didn't buy it. She was living here for a reason and I was curious as to why.
"I think we started off on the wrong foot. I assumed you were with her. Gena let me know that you're not but I gotta admit I'm more than a bit curious as to what you were doing there if it wasn't for her bite or any pack business."
Max said grabbing a couple of beers from the fridge. Turning to look at me he held out one towards me. I paused internally debating it. Fuck it! I had a feeling I was going to need it before I left.
"I met her daughter at a bar. We hit it off and she offered me a place to stay when I was living out of my car. Simple as that." I answered nonchalantly as I popped the cap.
"It's never as 'simple as that!' She befriended you for a reason." He said. The irritation peeking out in his tone.
Okay, true. But I wasn't about to say that to him especially after our last encounter and still not really knowing what I was doing here. I was getting a strange feeling they were wanting something from me too. For a girl with nothing, everyone seems to want something from me lately.
He took a drink of his beer before setting it on the small countertop. His eyes seemingly drilling into my head as he studied me. They were similar to Nancy's as I saw bits of gold in them but a little darker and the gold was more subtle.
"Why did her daughter contact you and have you told the Council about what happened?" His face stayed calm but the tone of his voice and slight narrowing of his eyes told me I was about to be in trouble if he didn't like my answer.
"She didn't. I told you, we met at a bar. She had-
"I'm talking about the human, Amber! Did she ask you to file a report with the Council? You didn't, did you?"
That was Anna's biological daughter? How does he know that unless…
"Is she here?"
"No, they're in Tacoma." Gena answered putting down a large knife she was using to slice potatoes. "I haven't had a chance to talk with them but I will, we both will."
She motioned to Max as she put her hand on his shoulder. This seemed to calm him as he closed his eyes to her touch. I explicitly remember the effect Nancy's touch brought but she wasn't here and red flags were starting to pop up.
"You know this...how?"
Gena shifted her weight, a sign she was nervous about answering even if her face gave nothing away.
"She lives there with a member of the pack. And before you start making accusations, we had no idea she was Anna's daughter at first! We have enough trouble as it is. Now he's obsessed with her. Actually I think it's more to do with his ego than anything else. He won't stop talking about her mother."
