The next couple of days I stayed busy in the kitchen trying to avoid Carol who seemed to be liking me less and less. It was one thing to treat me like the office slut but now she's working on the other staff.
Of course, I couldn't fully blame her. Gena has been anything but subtle about hiding the fact that I'm her new favorite person which hasn't helped me smooth things over. Another problem was people was starting to take sides. And while I was reluctant to go along I couldn't ignore it might help me learn about what's going on. People disappear regularly from places like this for both good and bad reasons but Lynn's place seems to be more frequent than most. I'm sure Gena has something to do with it but I'm hoping to get her to volunteer the information rather than drawing suspicion from asking outright.
So maybe I'll need to play the game a little no matter if i like it or not. Besides, as much as I liked Carol she was way out of her league. So was I, but at least I knew which league I was in.
"So everything is going well, I assume?"
Gena's voice startled me, Tamira, and a few other volunteers I had helping me with cleaning and reorganizing things. I couldn't believe some of the stuff John had been saving. Talk about a health hazard.
"It is. I got some great help so we're making really good time. It might be cutting it close for dinner but there's some chili that needs to be used soon and with some luck I can do up some cornbread to go with it. And I mean some, there's only a few boxes that I felt comfortable keeping.
"So half cornbread annnd half bread?" Gena asked raising a brow and cracking a small smile.
"Is that alright? There might be some French bread I can add."
"You're the boss! If that's how you want to do it then I'm all for it."
She answered cheerfully before turning sharply and heading off.
"Oh! Tamira had a complaint about Jeff. Something really needs to be done about him. Do you think you have time to hear her out?"
Gena looked between me and then to Melanie who suddenly seemed to be made of Jelly. I dropped what I was doing and rushed over, putting my arm around her. Tamira was about as shy as they came and was scared of just about everything. To say something to me was a huge step, someone like Gena who intimidated people easily must be terrifying for her.
"Go on... it's okay." I said in my softest and most encouraging voice but she shook her head frantically.
"It's nothing... I'm sure I just didn't understand..."
My nostrils flared with rage but not at her. This wasn't uncommon and was expected.
"You understood it perfectly, Tamira! He's spending a lot of time where and when he shouldn't. He walked in on our guest the other night knowing full well that he shouldn't. I know Carol likes him but everyone finds him creepy at the least. Maybe he's just slow- I don't know but this isn't a good place for him."
She pulled away and I decided it was best to let her have some space so I turned back to Gena who lips were pressed in a fine line and looking ready to go off. I was about to say something when she seemed to catch herself and softened her features before opening the door and meeting Tamira.
"Is this true?"
Jesus Gena you're going to scare her to death! I did my best not to try pulling Gena away as she grabbed the girl by the shoulders and stared into her eyes.
To my surprise Tamira nodded.
Gena let out a long breath. "This isn't the first time. While there's never been anything concrete, you're right, we can't keep ignoring this. Sooner or later something major might happen and I don't want us blamed for it. Do you want to do it or shall I?"
