I ended the call to the Council as I sat on the wet concrete ground with my back up against the building. Bastards! They'll look in to it they said with as much sincerity as an alcoholic claiming they're going to quit drinking. They obviously think I'm just a human trying to cause trouble. Maybe I should've tried the Luna card but that would certainly cause trouble.I lit a cigarette and watched the blurry noisy boxes drive up and down the street as I tried to calm down. It was just past 5:30 in the morning and people were wanting coffee. So would the staff and residents here. I should get up and make some but with another night without sleep, getting up was not something my body was wanting to do.
I was physically and mentally exhausted.
At least it wasn't Nancy that kept me up so that's progress isn't it? I think so. I haven't thought about her once all night. Can she say the same? I hope not.
I wonder what she'd say about this? At the very least I could of gotten her to call instead of me. I bet they'd of taken it far more seriously then.
"Crystal? Hey, you there?"
I opened my eyes as a blonde woman's face slowly came into focus. Gena was staring down at me with a rather amused look on her face and the sky was much brighter than a moment ago.
"What in the world are you doing sleeping out here?" She asked taking a drink of her Starbucks coffee.
My eyelids weighed a ton but the sleep was just enough to get me to feel highly embarrassed.
"I was smoking a cigarette and.... Sorry." I said trying to convince them to stay open. It was a battle I was losing.
She gave me a warm laugh. "I didn't realize we worked you so hard. Rough night?"
I forced myself up doing my best to ignore my crimped neck and my back screaming its protests and followed her into the building while giving her the update on what happened.
"Wait! You let a total stranger sleep in your room? Crystal, I admire your dedication but that's not acceptable. Most of the women here are troubled and won't hesitate to steal anything they can." She said taking a seat in her oversize chair while she tossed her sunglasses on the desk.
She looked immaculate as always wearing a white dress suit with a black & white striped blouse. Everything appeared to cost a fortune which was unlike anything else here. I gave it no mind as I've come to really like Gena despite some of the others who constantly talk behind her back.
I raised a brow cutting her off "I know that. But hey, even if she stole everything I owned, I be out maybe fifteen bucks. I don't have anything." I tried justifying. I was taken back by her reaction.
"That isn't the point. Your room is right next to where the records are stored which is why we dont let just anyone sleep there. You know this. I know you do because I expressly remember telling you this. We have a policy and it needs to be followed. Even by you." She gave me a stern look that reminded me of Nancy when she was annoyed with me.
She had a firm grip on her coffee cup her lips trembling slightly in a small frown. I really didn't get what the big deal was. If I could tell her about how she ended up in her condition, that would make a difference but of course, I couldn't.
"What's her name, did you get that? She asked pulling her laptop out of her oversize bag and opening it up.
"Of course I did, it's Amber."
"Amber what?" She asked sharply. What the hell? Then I remembered I never asked her for it. Shit!
"Crystal? " she asked sharply making me answer.
