I followed him to a small building just behind the main one. It was still far too dark to see a whole lot but the places looked like they were going to collapse at any moment.

Once inside we descended down a metal spiral staircase that creaked as we stepped reminding me of countless horror movies. Once we descended we were in what seemed to be an old mineshaft that was lined fully in concrete that was breaking and chipping from age. About forty feet down I could see a room that was lit up.

As we moved into a lighted room I was glad to finally be able to see again even if it wasn't at much. The whole place was concrete aside from the ceiling which was done with new unpainted wood.  It seemed like Jake felt the need to reinforce it which I couldn't blame him for.

A bare mattress laid on the floor opposite of where we came in with a small table and two chairs on either side just next to it. His laptop was open to some YouTube video that was paused. Clothes was piled up on the other side of the mattress looking like they hadn't been cleaned in weeks.

I watched him walk over to a small mini fridge that he opened revealing it full of beer. My goddess, Jake, do you have actual food anywhere?

"You have power?" I asked not sure what to say.

He sat down on the fridge not bothering to cover his naked body. I always hated how men would sit on things naked after sex. Jake in particular would often get a beer then sit on my furniture completely naked. That seemed like lifetime's ago. Just stay focused on the task Crystal.  If Nancy tapped into my mind right now… let's just say I was glad I was well out of range for that. Jake wasn't any cleaner than this place but I doubt that would stop her from jumping to conclusions.

"Yeah. Its illegal as fuck but it works. You going to turn me in for that now? What the fuck you doing here, Crystal? Seeing how quickly you took off I take it life with my wife isn't the happily ever after you thought it be. Don't tell me you're actually wanting any sympathy. At least I stuck it out for over a decade. You darling, didn't even last a month.  Yeah, I heard about Seattle.  Running off into the night as far as you could huh? Looks like that didn't work either. Another love triangle? Or perhaps you just missed me... He said tilting his head to the mattress making me wanna gag.

He seemed to find it amusing as a faint smile appeared. He then flicked off the cap from the beer sending it flying like a bullet past me. It would seem he's still upset with me.

"This may be out of her territory but I'm sure Nancy knows where you are. If not, well I found you, imagine how fast she would. Let's not give her a reason, shall we?" I took another look around not bothering to hide my disqust at the place.

"Forget about me for the moment, why are you here? She let you keep the lumberyard, right? Couldn't you afford a place in town?"

"How the fuck can I? He growled. "Everytime I turn around it's something. Vandalism, harassing the few I have still working there and customers, nobody would rent me a place even if I could afford it."

"You signed the divorce papers, what reason could she have?"

"Because it's a distraction? She just wants to fuck with me? Who knows?! I go in once in awhile,  but I keep it to a minimum.  You fuckin happy? Seriously,  Crystal, What the fuck you doing here?"

He had raised his voice but it was more desperation I detected than anger. Looking around this place only further confirmed that I wanted to do this.

"I need your help, Jake. I need you to claim a mate. If you do that, I'll see about helping you get some part of your old life back. Tell me, have you found your mate yet?"
