1 year later...

Sunlight creeped through the thin spaces between the blinds above the side of her bed. The room illuminated with light as the sun woke up, but the blankets shielded her in darkness as she dreamed of a gorgeous beach.

The young girl walked along the shores, feeling her feet sink into the wet sand as the next wave came crashing. She watched as the sun slowly disappeared behind the horizon, the sky painted a series of colours she wished she could see in the sky everyday, from red to purple. She sat away from the shores and played with the sand, feeling it cool down as it ran through her fingers and down onto her legs like a waterfall. The girl closed her eyes and listened as the waves came in. They were so soothing she could of fell asleep right there on the sand, but something started to pound in her ear drums, something that didn't belong there. It got louder and louder and the beach slowly vanished before her eyes.

She reached her arm out from the blankets and searched for the alarm clock, feeling the surface of her wooden table. Papers scattered onto the floor along with her phone. She lost her patience and smacked the table for the button hoping her hand would land on it and put an end to the noise that woke her up from paradise. She spread her arm out even farther and before she knew it she was on the floor, her head aching in pain.

The door swung open. "Layla? What are you —- are you alright?"

She looked up to see her mother staring down at her, her dark hair pinned into a bun.

"I'm okay. Just starting off the first day back to school with a twist." she said with a sigh. She looked at her mother with desperate eyes. "Please tell me you have pancakes waiting for me downstairs?"

Her mother gave a quiet chuckle. "You better hurry before they get cold."

She got dressed and scurried down the stairs. Her eyes preyed down onto the pancakes. She swore she saw a spotlight shining down onto them. Layla dug into them like the animal she was, stuffing in more before she could even swallow her last bite. She later packed up and headed out the door.

The entrance was crowded with familiar faces and new ones. Some of the students hung out on the stairs and some sat on the grass just beside while others didn't hesitate to walk in and face the reality of a new year in a place they didn't want to be. Layla struggled to get to the entrance. She held two large bags in each of her hands filled with school supplies while the heavy bag on her back made her journey up those stairs a living hell, not to mention the pushes and shoves she got.

A young guy leaned against the wall at the entrance, his eyes scanning for someone he hoped he would see soon. He caught sight of a girl shaking up the stairs, her dark long hair hiding her face. The guy didn't need to see her face to know who she was. He dropped his bag on the ground and rushed to her.

"I'll take care of these." he said grabbing the bags in her hands. She removed her hair out from her face and looked up to him. His brown eyes glistened in the sun and his short dark hair remained still against the wind. "Kyle!" she quietly yelled and wrapped her arms around him. He mumbled words into her shoulder. She let go of him. Their faces were so close they could feel each others hot breath.

"I've been waiting for you here all morning." he says smiling. His lips fell onto hers, her hair brushing through his fingers.

"You're coming over for the run tonight right?" he asks grabbing her bags again. "I told my mom I'd be back home late. Where are the others?"

"They wanted to wait inside."

They walked down the hall to her locker, conversations buzzing through their ears. Kyle managed to fit the bags into her small locker and they walked back down the wall into the main room downstairs.
