As the end of October came closer, the wind picked up to waves of icy air hitting the naked ones with cool shards of pain at their bare skins, forcing everyone to begin wearing thicker jackets and thin scarves.
Layla and Jake weren't so lucky. They took the chilly weather badly as they locked their arms around their chest and waist to conserve the warmth left in their arms but it didn't last long. All they could do was shelter themselves in their small tent they found days ago.
This night was the coldest yet and they struggled to keep still and miraculously fall into a deep sleep, but Layla gave up. She turned over and stared at Jake's gentle face, his thin trimmed beard now a as thick as Derek's. She could only imagine how thick Derek's must be...
"Need something?" he whispered out, his voice slightly raspy. His eyes still kept close, not daring to open them and not getting another chance at rest.
"I thought you were asleep?" she whispered back. She watched a small smile peer from his thick beard. "Never was."
He decided to open his eyes. Even though there was no longer any chances of falling asleep, he could finally see her beautiful face. That's all that mattered now.
They both shifted around in their small sleeping bags, trying to sink in deeper. They both laid on their backs and stared at the boring top of their tent.
"What do you miss? Ever since being taken?" Layla asked not directly to Jake. He adjusted his head a little more, peeking at her when she wasn't looking.
"I miss my bed." she answered herself. He let out a giggle. "I miss hot showers."
Layla moaned. "I could really use one right now."
"I miss..." Jake drifted off. "Good food."
"Fresh clothes."
"Pancakes."
"Music."
"TV."
"Books."
"Pillows."
"Sleep."
They both laughed after each answer, until it went quiet. "I miss my mom."
Mom. Jake ever since, always hated hearing mom. He sometimes wished the word didn't exist, at least not in his world. Things would be easier. But shockingly, he said "I miss my mom."
Layla was just as surprised as Jake when the words flowed out, maybe even more. She turned to him, staring at his side. "I don't regret what I did. I never will, but I do miss her. I miss all of it."
He thought back at his family, when they were all together living happily.
The sun was up and Binghamton was awake as the streets quickly filled with students running to their buses and workers rushing to make their morning coffee for the car ride there.
Kyle waited outside leaning against the brick walls of the bank, smokers joining the club of leaning against the wall. John came out almost hopping as he struggled to keep his wallet organized.
"Got enough for food and supplies, whatever we need for the next week." he said, his hair blowing with the wind. "We should get some stuff now while we're here, I can even steal a car."
Kyle frowned at him, now staring at a possible criminal. "You steal cars for a living?"
"What? No I'm a goddamn werewolf who's got four legs with speed faster than that old mustang that in fact, I barely drove." he explained. "I just know how to break into a car or play cop."
