⚠️GORE WARNING ⚠️
(This is a long one...sorry to all the Matthew fans out there)
~Alfred's POV~
I was in the middle of getting ready for a run when I got a phone call from Ludwig (Germany) which I assumed had to be important since we haven't spoken to each other since I started going into my downward spiral. I hesitated for a moment before answering, I opened my mouth to say something but nothing would come out for some reason. "Hello? America? Are you there?" Ludwig's voice sounded more gentle and unsure then his usual sharp and straight to the point tone. I managed to push out a reply, "uh- yeah I'm here..." I heard Ludwig let out a sigh, "Im sorry if I'm bothering you but I need you to come to Germany, there's been a situation and I'm afraid it might mean war, I need your help to calm the Chancellor and clear up some rumors." "Rumors?" "Ja...there's been talk about American spies in Berlin, a young American attempted to blow up the Chancellery and claims to be a former Navy Seal but we checked and his claims appear to be false. But we did a background check and he's an ex communications officer..." "ex? What did he do to get fired?" "Nothing severe like stealing information but he did show up to work under the influence" I sighed and slid off my running shoes, "I'm starting to put it together now, yeah I'll come up there and clear things up" "Danke Alfred, I'll pay for your expenses" "Thanks Luds" I put the phone on speaker and started changing into my work clothes. "Oh...Alfred?" I struggled to tie my tie, "yeah?" There was a long pause of silence and I looked back at my cell phone. "Ludwig?" A few more seconds of silence surrounded the both of us before he finally answered, "I'm glad your feeling better" and then he hung up. I frowned and picked up my phone. I never reallt thought Germany cared if I'm being honest... sure we're friends but I never really felt close to him...so I guess I never thought about how my disappearance effected him and everyone else...shit now I feel like an asshole. I slid my phone into my pocket and packed my bags before texting Matt and walking out the door. I walked to the driveway and got inside my car and turned my keys in the ignition only to hear my engine sputter and die. I furrowed my brows and tried again to no avail. "Shit." The batteries dead. I got out of the car and ran my fingers through my hair thinking of how I was going to get to the airport now. As I was thinking I heard a car pull up in front of my house and stop, I looked over and saw Christina step out of her car. "Need help?" I gave her a small nervous smile and scratched my head, "you wouldn't happen to have any jumper cables on you would ya?" She smiled sheepishly, "no sorry...but I can give you a ride if you want" "I don't want to bother you-" "oh don't worry about it I just went to buy some cat food I don't have anywhere to be" She smiled at me and finally I gave in. I put my bag into her trunk and got in the front seat with her. "So I assume your going to the airport?" She started up the car and we were on our way.
"Yeah...I have some business in Germany"
"Germany! Wow that's a long ways away...how long are you gonna be gone for?"
"I don't know actually...Hopefully not too long but depending on what happens I may be gone for a week or two"
"Woah...is this like...a top secret mission?" She glanced at me with sparkling eyes. I chuckled and shook my head.
"No not really, some idiot has almost everyone in Berlin scared for the chancellor's security so I have to go up there and clear some things up."
"Woah- are you sure you should really be telling me this?"
"Well...probably not but I haven't told you anything you won't hear about in the news pretty soon"
"I guess that's true....so...you've gotta be affiliated with the president if your going to speak with the chancellors of Germany"
"I guess you could say that"
"That sounds really scary Alfred, don't you worry about assassins?"
"Nope"
"Why not?"
"Now that, really is a secret" I looked out the window at the trees and cars passing. "You seem really interested in this kind of stuff, don't tell me your secretly an assassin"
She pouted and smacked my arm playfully. "What an awful thing to say! Im just curious is all, I feel like I'm in a cheesy spy movie" she giggled to herself, "your like James Bond or something" I chuckled and shook my head. "If only, I wish I was a bad ass spy"
"Not me, I don't like the idea of having to be worried about dying every five seconds, I'm perfectly happy just being a teacher"
"You say that like your job isn't important"
We stopped at a red light and she looked up at me, "I'm not saying it isn't...but it certainly can't be as important as what you do..."
I felt my checks flush a little as I stared into her eyes.
"I don't think so...after all your job is to build up the people who are going to take over for us when they get older...your building m-...America"
Her eyes seemed to pour into my soul and my heart began to thump as her cheeks grew red as well, but the long loud honk of a car horn snapped us both out of our trance and forced us through the green light and back on our path to the airport. We were both still blushing and we were quiet for a minute trying to control our embarrassment.
"...Thank you for saying that...it was really sweet" Christina smiled and for the rest of the car trip we sat in blissful embarrassing silence.
Eventually we reached the airport and Christina parked to let me out. We looked at each other and struggled to find any sort of parting words.
"Hey um...Christina? When I get back would you maybe..."
"Yes?"
"...do you want to get dinner?"
She smiled and fixed my rushed messy tie, "I'd like that..." she gave me a kiss on the cheek and got out of the car to help me with my bag. I sat there for a minute and held my cheek. I was on cloud nine, I'm my heart was beating out of my chest and I couldn't help but celebrate in my head. I did it! For the first time in Fuck knows how long I'm gonna go on a date! I calmed myself down and got out of the car and got my bag thanking her for the ride before saying goodbye and walking into the airport.
I can't wait to get back.
