"Gather round children." Eveene Smith called out to the children playing in the fields. She needed to get back soon, there wasn't much time left.
The children came running and sat around her in a semi circle. They were tired from play, and eager to listen to any words Eveen uttered. After all, they always told the children stories of magic and monsters. It was even rumored that she herself, was a wizard or witch.
One thing that stood out about Eveen was their views about things that normal people find important.
Take gender for example.
Whenever they were asked if they wanted to be called 'ma'am' or 'sir', the response was always the same.
"Energy can't be created or destroyed. Only moved and felt. All I am is energy, so call me whatever you'd like. After all, energy has no gender."
The children admired her views and words, much like any adults who've met her.
"What story are you gonna tell us now Mama Veen?"
"Ooh ooh! Can you tell us about the werewolves?" One child spoke excitedly.
"What about the vampires?" A girl inquired.
"NO, tell us about the fairies Mister Veen!" one boy shouted passionately.
Eveen tapped the ground with that old cane that she loved so much, resulting in immediate silence. The children didn't go near it at all, too afraid of the design. The wooden snake wrapped around a long stick, with a green marble in its mouth and glowing ruby eyes looking anything but inviting to most of the children.
All but one, that is.
One child adored the cane, it saddened her that the other children couldn't see the beauty of it.
"Now now children, I have to part with you all soon, and I'd like to tell one last story."
The children looked up at them, sadness radiating from their energies, but no one daring to speak.
Once everyone was settled, they started the last story to be told.
"Long ago in a land far away, there lived a beautiful and kind woman.
She was human and was loved by all who'd encountered her.
The gods loved her so much that her mood affected the weather, her smile itself could move waters.
There was a King who adored the idea of her so much, that he stole her away from the rest of the world.
He was evil and vicious, Believing that only he deserved to feel all of her love and compassion.
He wanted her for himself and so one night, with the help of wizards, witches, and other mystical beings- he stole her away, so that she could become his queen.
His pack followed him to the land of the humans, curious and eager.
Once they saw his actions, they followed suit and claimed humans that made their heart beat twice as fast.
These were their mates.
There was speculation that the oceans miles away from the land was a portal to a world of mystical beings and magic gifted from the gods.
Anyone who crossed the seas were never seen again.
When the world caught wind that Teal was missing, they mourned heavily.
Teal felt the devastation from seas away and began to weep.
The world began to rain.
People of the land that she once resided in named themselves Tealsville in her memory.
She lived the rest of her life in sorrow and her king did not love her like he once thought that he did.
For the Teal that brought sun to the world was gone.
Replaced by a stranger that he himself created.
He no longer wanted Teal and so he allowed her to return home.
The town did not recognize her new self and banished her.
With a heart now full of sorrow, Teal died alone and cold.
The gods cursed her bloodline with bits of her spirit after her death.
Once every century, a reincarnation of teal is born. Her spirit, taking form again, in someone else.
The person's abilities aren't uncovered until they are swept across the portal of Tealsville's seas.
That person is chosen by the gods before birth, their destiny written in stone.
The story will be the same each time, never rewritten.
Unless Teal allows it to be."
Most of the children fell victim to the calling of drowsiness.
And with that, Eveen disappeared into the wind, the marble in the snakes mouth left behind in the grass.
