"Did I do something wrong, or is it something I said?"
Evelyn sat on the couch, waiting for Jack to get home. She had gotten back from school a little over an hour ago, and she and Jack had made plans to go out for dinner that evening. She waited, and waited and waited.
"stood up at my own house" she chuckled to herself, trying to lighten her own mood.
It was around eight when she finally heard the jingle of Jack's keys in the doorway. She watched as the boy pushed the door open, "where were you?" she asked, watching him take off his shoes.
"out."
"Out?" She could feel rage brew inside of her, "Where out?"
"Doesn't matter Evelyn, I was just out." He was wrong, it mattered.
"We had plans tonight Jack."
"oh well." She felt her eyes grow wide,
"Oh well? Really?"
"Yes Evelyn, really. Now, I'm really not in the mood for this." She rolled her eyes.
"What's wrong?" She asked, sensing something was off with Jack.
"Nothings wrong Evelyn. Something doesn't always have to be wrong." Jack spat back at her.
Evelyn felt tears well up in her eyes as her boyfriend pushed past her. She heard their bedroom door slam upstairs, and shortly after, she felt the tears fall to her cheeks.
THe girl had hoped that this would be a one-off thing, that maybe Jack had just had a bad day. But, somewhere, she knew he hadn't.

Evelyn stood there, staring at Jack in shock. Her body felt cold, and the world that was once spinning around her had stopped. because, in front of her stood Jack, the one person who could make everything go away.
"Ev, come on, you have to say something." She looked into Jack's eyes, processing the information.
"Jack, I don't know what to say." she finally spoke. She watched as his face dropped, anxiety filling his eyes. " I waited months for you to reach out and say something, and just as I was finally getting over you, you say this."
"I'm sorry Evelyn. I am so sorry." Evelyn nodded her head in response. Jack nodded back and turned around to leave the building.
"You know," she said to his back, "What I said in the song was right." Jack stopped and looked at her over his shoulder. "I didn't think we'd have a last kiss." she watched Jack bob his head up and down. "I thought we'd grow old together, maybe have a family. I just-" she paused, "I thought you felt the same." She looked at the floor, unsure if Jack was even there anymore. For all she knew, she was gushing her feelings to the door across the hall.
"I did." Evelyn looked up and saw Jack in front of her, desperately trying to make eye contact.
"So what changed Jack? How did you just turn it off?" Evelyn studied Jack's eyes looking for an answer.
"I didn't just turn it off Evelyn," He stared at her, trying to read her, "I could never just stop." Jack reached up and held her face in his hand. He watched as tears filled her eyes, and then slowly slipped down to her cheek.
"then why did you push me away?" She asked, feeling her voice crack.
"Because I was stupid Ev, I shouldn't have. I didn't know how much I needed you until you were gone."
"Did I do something wrong?" she reached up and put her hands over his, "Was it something I said?"
"No, it could never be your fault." The pair stared at each other in silence,
"We can't just pick up where we left off Jack." Evelyn finally said, "It's been too long."
"Then let me take you out." Evelyn could feel butterflies in her stomach, "I'll pick you up, and we will go on a date, then I will bring you home, and try to kiss you goodnight."
"What if-"
"no what if's, just one date Ev." Jack interrupted. Evelyn looked at him, for a minute more.
"Alright." she paused, "Pick me up tomorrow at eight. One minute late and that's it."
Jack smiled, "I'll see you then."
