“Can you believe this bullshit” he groaned, stretching and standing up out of the coffin, his earphones around his neck. “I told you I had a power! I guess they saved the best for last. Immortality. Now that’s one off the A-list- ”
“Asshole!” I shouted at him, shoving him. “We all thought you were dead!” Despite being me being angry with him, he gave me this look of relief to see me. His eyes were so soft and his smile was genuine.
“If you were dead why do you smell so bad?” Kelly asked him, nose scrunched up.
“I appear to have shat myself” he replied carelessly.
“Were you havin’ a wank in there?” Alisha inquired right after.
“So what if I was. Man can’t enjoy a quick shuffle in his own coffin? It’s not like I was expecting visitors. And you-” he exclaimed, walking towards Simon “You little weirdo. What was all that on the roof of the community center?”
“I was trying to save you. Everyone saw it.”
“Well you failed. Spectacularly didn’t you?” Simon looked away, angered.
“Nathan, just shut the hell up. We all saw him try to save you and you’re being ungrateful. So just be glad that you’re alive and move on!” I shouted at him.
He sighed. “Ok...I need to eat” he stated, rubbing his stomach. “Has anyone got a kebab?”
“...do you want some chewing gum?” Simon asked him, the anger and regret in his face gone, handing him the pack of gum.
“Tutti fruity?”
“I like it.” Nathan snatched it and took out a piece of gum, enjoying the flavor he thought he would never taste again. “Man it was a bad scene in there. I thought I was going to starve to death.”
Curtis took a deep breath in. “You’re immortal. You can’t starve to death.”
“So you’re an expert, uh?”
“What are you gonna do now?” Kelly asked.
“I guess I gotta go tell my mum and my sister that I’m immortal. Catch you later.” After that, he blew me this weird, sarcastic kiss and walked away, shifting in his jeans because he defecated in them. We all watched on as he so calmly walked out of his coffin back home. I was personally hoping for a heartfelt reunion. But with Nathan, it wasn’t possible especially if there were other people around.
The next day, as we were all getting dressed in our jumpsuits for the day, Nathan gave us all the bloody details of how he told his parents that he’s alive when Shaun walked into the room, confused with the fact that he was looking at Nathan after we told Shaun that he was dead.
“Really?” Nathan asked sarcastically, placing his index and middle finger to his neck to reassure he had a pulse. “Apparently not. Can dead men do this?” He started dancing and I rolled my eyes, slightly annoyed that Nathan was back at his antics but then again, it was too quiet and dull without him around. But of course, Shaun was not amused. Nathan graciously ended his number by running directly into the locker door, a small bruise forming on his forehead.
“Well, I’ll put you back on the system” Shaun said calmly, turning on his heels and exiting the locker room.
“Hold on, what? Are you saying I was out of the system? I’m a free man and if I didn’t show up here, no one would’ve come looking for me?”
Shaun shrugged his shoulders. “We thought you were dead.”
“Bet you regret comin’ now, don’t you?” I asked, nudging his side with a smirk on my face.
