"What have you learned so far doing community service?" Sally asked, legs crossed in her swivel chair. Wait, what? Sally, she's...alive. But how? I felt tense and nervous. How could this have happened?? It was probably Curtis, again, changing time.
But I put on a calm face and rolled my eyes before responding "Nothing."
"You learned nothing?"
"Yup."
"Um...ok. Well how do you think you've changed?"
"I haven't."
"Sure you have."
"You're not me so you don't know anything." I sensed that I was being bitter towards her but at the time, I could care less. I hated it. I wasn't even supposed to be there.
"Have you thought about what you want to do when this is over?"
"Go back to the States...can I go now?"
"...Sure." I shot up off of the couch and exited the office as swiftly as possible. When I left, my phone vibrated in the pocket of my jumpsuit.
From Ed:
Hey. Im coming 2 get u from the community center in an hour.
To Ed:
Where r we going?
From Ed:
It's a surprise ;)
I smiled, elated that I could finally hang out with my step-brother after not seeing him for so long. As I was smiling at my phone, I bumped into Nathan who surprisingly didn't react that bad.
"Excuse me" he said.
"Excuse you" I replied, smirking. He smiled back and for a split second, he looked at my lips than back into my eyes. I barely even like this kid, why would I like his eyes? He's rude, sarcastic, but...sometimes sweet and misunderstood.
"How come you never talk to me?" he asked, sincerely.
"To be perfectly honest, it's because you can be a major prick." He frowned and it seemed as if he actually took it to heart. "But, you're really funny and I don't want to get distracted from our community service..."
He relaxed. "Oh, well then I guess I'll be talking to you a lot more." He winked and just like usual, I smiled while rolling my eyes and went to pick up a broom to sweep the floor. He swept beside me, making an occasional remark or 2, sending me into laughing fits. He'd pinch my side, I'd almost fall. I'd push his broom, he'd chase me with it. He'd put his arm around my shoulders, I'd swoon...wait, wait, wait. I did not just say that I'd swoon. I'd...I'd-
"Why has he been in there longer than the rest of us?" Kelly asked, talking about Simon, interrupting me and Nathan's little game.
"I don't know," replied Nathan, letting go of me. "It's obviously because he's making more progress. He's such a little arse-kisser."
"I think something's wrong" I added.
"Oh really. Like what?" Nathan asked.
I whispered. "Do you think she might know Simon took Tony's credit card?"
Their eyes grew. "Shit!" they both exclaimed.
"We'll just do what we've been doing. Deny, deny, deny" he suggested.
Later while outside the center, scraping old flyers and posters off of the wall, I asked Simon quietly "What took you so long in Sally's office?"
His eyes got wide and he looked down sheepishly. "Nothing."
