"Alright, the judge has ordered 11 months of community service."
"On what charges? That's way too much for theft which I didn't even do."
"I don’t make the decisions I just deliver them." He said, throwing me the papers to read for myself. Unbelievable. I'm on probation for almost a year all because of that prick at the bar. After reading the files, I slid them back to him. He organized them and put them back into the green folder he took them from.
"Your first day of community service will begin tomorrow." He then handed me a card with the address and phone number of the community center I'd be working at. "Here's the address and phone number. When you get there, check in with a man named Tony and he'll tell you what to do from there. Any questions?"
"Nope." I replied, popping the P.
"Well then that's it." I got up and put my hands in my pockets. "Have a nice day." I murmured.
"You too." I shut the door to his office, walked down the hall and out of the building. I walked down the street. The brisk air nipping away at my skin. I walked quickly and finally reached the bus stop and waited anxiously for the bus. It finally arrived and I hopped on. I paid and looked for an empty seat. The bus was packed as I walked down the aisle. I was about to just stand when a boy who looked my age with curly hair moved his bag from the seat beside him. I smiled and sat down. I wanted to say "thank you" but he had his earphones in his ears, blasting what sounded like "It's Time" by Imagine Dragons. I decided to do the same. I put my earphones in and focus on not missing my stop.
The ride felt awkward and long even though it only took 15 minutes. I got up and left the bus, not giving the boy a last glance. I stepped off and walked around the corner and down the street towards Simon's house. I was just a few feet away from the house when I saw Simon leaving the house. He was walking at a quick pace with his headphones in and head down. I stopped in front of him and asked "Where are you going in such a hurry?"
"Oh. I-I'm going t-to see a friend of mine."
"Ok. Well I'll see you later then."
"Ok." He said quickly before speed walking down the street. I knew there was something he was hiding from me and it would take a while to get him to fess up. I didn't bother to try to think of what he was up to so I just continued walking to the house. I unlocked the door with their spare key and entered their living room. Kate was sitting with a blond woman who looked about the same age as her. I could tell they were talking about something serious due to their hushed tone and somber mood.
"Hello" I said, awkwardly waving to the blond woman.
"Hi April. This is Mrs. Watson. Mrs. Watson, this is April. She's a friend of Simon who's staying with us for a little while." Kate replied. I waved to the woman and she waved back.
"Well, I'm going to go upstairs now. Nice meeting you Mrs. Watson."
"Nice meeting you too darling." I walked up the stairs hurriedly to avoid any other awkward interactions. I walked into my room and shut the door behind me. I slid my jacket off and tossed it onto my bed. I decided to contact a few friends from home just to update them on my life so far. I opened my laptop and quickly logged into my email. I typed away at the long emails, explaining how I thought I made friends who later ditched me and got arrested afterwards for theft only to have my mother kick me out. It angered me to even think about it. It hadn't sunk in yet that I was only kicked out the night before. I looked out of the window to get my mind off of it and couldn't believe who I saw. I saw Raina, walking hand-in-hand with my mother, on the way home from school. I used to do that. I used to pick my sister up from her new school and walk home together. She talked about all the new friends she's made or the new things she's learning. It made me happy that she was adjusting well. I wanted so badly to run outside, hug Raina, and tell her that I missed her dearly but I knew that I couldn't. I loved her with all of my heart but I knew that my mother couldn't even stand to see my face again. I wonder what lie she told Raina. I waited until they faded down the street and sat back down on the bed. I then looked down on my wrist at the friendship bracelet Raina and I made a few weeks back.
