Two years pass- the gang was closer than ever.
Sixteen year old, Darry, had gotten in his first ever job, roofing houses; the twelve year old boy, Sodapop had gotten his first kiss, Sandy; and the now ten year old, Ponyboy, had just received honor roll from fifth grade.
Fourteen year old, Two-Bit, was threatened by many teachers that he wouldn't graduate, but he somehow made it to high school. Thirteen year old, Steve, just was the same as always (His mom told him to go on a diet from all the cake he packed in); thirteen year old, Dally, was mischievous as ever, and twelve year old Johnny was still that little nice boy everyone knew and loved.
As time passed, Tru's mom was getting weaker and weaker, and Tru, an eleven year old, had no choice but to stay home from school and take care of her. Her dad was busier than ever at work, so Tru pretty much cooked the dinners (Usually a salad, or mac&cheese). Darry and his mom would mostly come over and help, and she would always be filled was gratitude and joy when they stepped through her front door.
Even though Tru's parents told her it was only from 'old age' and 'these things happen when you aren't a child anymore', Tru refused to believe it. Her mother was only thirty-six, and barely had any wrinkles on her face.
"You okay, Mom?" Tru asked, as her mother laid on the bed, beside her.
"Yes, baby. I'm fine."
"You're obviously not fine. You're in a bed, and can barely get up for Pete's sake! You should be in the hospital."
"Tru. You know we don't have enough money-"
"I can give you some of my money! I have an allowance- the gang would probably pitch in a dollar maybe-" Tru said eagerly. Tear were threatening to escape her eyes.
"Yeah!" Darry said from the other side on the bed, holding Mrs. Trumen's hand. "I have allowance! So do Soda and Pony. I outta bet Steve, Two-Bit, and Dally have some as well!"
"Kids, it won't matter." The mother said, regretting the words almost immediately.
Darry's head darted to the side, replaying those words in his head. Tru eyes went wide, and a single tear fell down her face; she tried to suck back in the rest in her eyes. "Mom..." She said slowly. "What do you mean... 'It won't matter'?"

Johnny's POV
Tuesday 5:35 a.m.
I barely slept, but I wasn't tired at all. The whole night, I basically played with Tru's hair, being careful not to wake her up. I was afraid that if I went to sleep, this perfect moment would never happen again; so I stayed awake, savoring it.
The moonlight still came in, shining down on the corner of the bed. The crickets were chirping, the air was still, calm, and cool, and Tru was with me. All was perfect. Well, really the only things that made it perfect was Tru.
Then, the door opened.
Yes, the bedroom door flung open, revealing a nasty old man with a half-drunken beer bottle in hand. I jumped, causing Tru to wake up, almost immediately. She started to rub her eyes, but immediately came to her senses when she saw her dad coming right for her. The closer he came, the more I backed up Tru with my arm. I shot Tru a glance, while putting on my tough face. She looked terrified.
