Johnny's POV
Saturday Morning, May 14; 9:54 a.m
As we entered the hospital waiting room, it immediately sent a gust of cold down my spine. I shivered.
The lobby looked the exact same as it always did, but this time, it felt off. Physically it wasn't different, but mentally it seemed scarier. The atmosphere was somehow heavier. The doctors and nurses weren't as lively, weren't as happy.
"Okay," Darry started walking over to the counter. "You guys go sit in the chairs and wait for me to come back with the room number, okay?" He directed the sentence to Ponyboy.
"201."
"What?" The twenty year old looked back at me.
"201." I repeated. "That's her room. I visited her yesterday."
"Oh." He said, clearing his throat. "Then... then I guess we can just go."
A warm feeling in the air moved closer and closer towards my body as we made our way to her hospital room. Almost as if the room was calling me. I could tell the gang felt uneasy, and I self-consciously wished Dallas was here.
As we walked the hallway, turning the corner, a finger tapped my shoulder. Spinning around, I noticed Ponyboy all red and teary-eyed. He was trying to hold it in. "I don't wanna do this." He said with difficulty, trying to fight the lump in his throat. It seemed like he needed more comforting than me. It had dawned on me that he was only fourteen.
"She'll wake up." I said, rubbing the boys back, but it only made Pony cry more.
Once we met the room Tru stayed at, we carefully took our time piling in the white room. I didn't think we were supposed to be there without a doctor, but that wasn't the first thing on my mind.
Darry, then Soda, then Steve, and everyone else walked into the room, closing the door behind us. We all had the same idea that we wanted to say our last good-byes before some random doctor came to pull the plug.
I gazed over Tru's limpless body. She looked so perfect just laying there. No expressions were found in her face, but she was still beautiful. Even with scratches and stitches covering.
"Who wants to go first?" The twenty year old asked, rubbing his eyes with my hand. "We don't have all day, but we do have some time to spare."
Two-Bit Mathews took a step first, grabbing an empty chair and setting it backwards to sit beside her bed. He tried to clear up his tears while smiling softly. "Ha," He started, rubbing the side of his head. "We're gonna miss you, kid. We really are."
A few moments of silence followed before he covered his face with his hand and rubbed his temples. "Gosh, I don't know what to say- never been good with serious talks." He started to let out a chuckle. "Ha, I know you'll be fine though. The thought of you looking down at us from up in the clouds... years later, smiling- or who knows- maybe even laughing with us." Tears started to run down his face. "I'll never forget you, Trumen. Ain't nobody can forget you."
After Two-Bit took a moment for himself, he got up off the chair and returned to where we all stood. Although Soda and Steve were hesitant, they both made their way up to her bed and crouched down next to her. After that, so did Darry, then Pony; all saying their last thoughts and tearing up in the middle.
It took a while, but most of it was blurred for me. Reality was hitting, and it felt wrong of me to not be crying. The whole time, I hadn't even thought of life without Trumen. I wasn't even thinking about how she was going to die today or what would become of me after. Somewhere in my head, I just clung onto hope.
