My dad and I were sitting on the swinging chair. It was nice to spend some time with my dad since I missed him a lot. He drank his beer while we watched the clouds float overhead. I laid my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes. A thought then occurred to me.
"Dad?" He hummed. "How did you find out mom was an angel?" He chuckled at my question.
"Besides her being beyond beautiful?" I rolled my eyes at him. "Hmm... let me think." He scratched his head. "Ahh... well, it wasn't the best way to find out if I'm being honest."
Flashback
I smiled at the flowers I bought the beautiful woman in my life. I've never been a super romantic guy, but I'd make an exception for that gorgeous woman. She's pure and beautiful both inside and out. How was I so lucky to convince her to be with me? Man, if my friends saw this, they'd never let me hear the end of it.
I then became really nervous. What if she doesn't like the flowers? Ahh! I should've asked for her favorite flowers! She has blond hair, so I went with daisies, but what if she hates daisies? Or even worse... what if she hates flowers? Stupid! Stupid! She could be allergic! I was about to throw them in the trash, but I heard the front door opening.
I heard her footsteps coming closer, so I began to panic. Should I just hide them or-
"Are those for me?" I heard her voice go up an octave. I simply smiled and nervously scratched the back of my neck. "They're beautiful." She took and sniffed them. "I love them!" She then kissed me.
"Oh, thank God." I breathed out. She looked at me in confusion. "I was worried you wouldn't like daisies and then I didn't know if you were allergic to-"
"I love you so much!" She swung her arms around my neck and kissed me.
"That's so refreshing to hear."
"Why? Do I not tell you enough?" She looked sad.
"No!" I saw tears lining her eyes. "No! I mean no. No but yes. Wait not yes but no... I love you!" I blurted out, causing her to chuckle.
"I have something I need to tell you." She took my hand and led me to the couch. "We need to talk." She sighed and began playing with the flowers.
"Oh, no!" She scrunched her brows in confusion. "Please don't do the whole it's not you, it's me. News flash... it's always the other person because if it wasn't then you wouldn't be saying this. Why? You just told me you love me." I began hitting my hand against my head.
"What are you talking about?" She held my hand.
"You're breaking up with me." I whispered.
"Why would you get that idea?" She was beyond confused. "I just told you that I love you." I blushed at her and hid my face in her shoulder.
"You can't just start a conversation with we need to talk. Nothing good ever comes out of a conversation like that." I mumbled into her shoulder.
"Well, it depends how you take the news." She mumbled. I looked up at her. "I... umm... you know how you always ask about my family?" I rapidly nodded. To be honest, I've been wanting to meet her dad so I could ask for her hand. I really wanted to marry this woman. "I-I always deflect from conversation about them."
"Do you have a strained relationship with them?"
"You could say that." She nervously chuckled. "My parents aren't alive anymore." I noticed her expression fall. "And my relationship with my sister is... nonexistent. It's complicated and-" She sighed when she looked into my eyes. "I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm... different?"
