Dear Dream,Do you remember our biggest fight? Yes, that one. I know you thought of it right away. I still can't believe that was our biggest fight throughout the entire time we were dating. I mean, seriously? Over a silly choice of restaurant? We literally fought over where to go to eat on our one year anniversary. It was literally the stupidest thing ever, but man, we really got heated LOL. I wanted to go somewhere lowkey, but like still a nice sit down place. On the other hand, you wanted to go all out at a fancy restaurant. Neither of us would compromise. It was horrible.
I'm pretty sure it was Drista who finally forced us to go to fucking Applebee's because we couldn't agree. She was so tired of watching us bicker back and forth for like an hour over where to go so she picked for us. God, I love your little sister, but come on now, Applebee's?!? Yikes.
After dinner, we drove home in silence. You pulled up to my house, looked at me and gave me the smallest smile I had ever seen, and then looked away until I got out of the car. You just look straight forward as you tapped on your wheel to the beat of the song, softly humming the tune. I think we didn't speak to each other for a week after that. We are so stubborn. It's kind of funny to think about it now though. Every other anniversary after that we didn't argue or fight— it was nice. We had learned our lesson.
The point of bringing it up is because I drove past that very Applebee's the other day. Seeing it made me think of you.
Did you know that they were tearing it down to build a new hotel? It's insane. I would never admit this out loud, but it's kind of upsetting. Such a big memory from our relationship is being torn down forever. Damn the city of Orlando for continuing to grow their capitalism.
Do you ever see something and think of me, Clay? It hasn't happened a lot to me recently, but when it does, it rips me up inside for a few moments. It's awful. It's like I freeze up and think of what could have been. A heartbreaking moment in time where a bunch of 'what ifs' cross my mind. I sit there and reel in the pain for those short few moments before returning to reality, pushing those feelings away. Maybe there are times when the same thing happens to you. I'd like to think so.
And if doesn't happen or you feel absolutely nothing when you come across those same items, people, or places that usually remind me of you...
Well, good for you, Clay.
Sincerely, Lila 🦋
