It had started drizzling rain, but Scott couldn't be bothered to notice it due to the severity of their conversation. They were standing outside of Mitch's apartment, it had been a long day for both of them. Mitch's eyes, still big and bright even with the downcast, were burning holes through him, straight to his heart. Why was he surprised at the emotions twisting and boiling inside his chest? He wasn't this good of a man, his mind yelled at him. He had all but embraced his selfish ways early in life, to point that he couldn't even understand why he was pushing Mitch away. It always happened like this. In hindsight, he should've seen this coming. He knew going into this that it wouldn't work, but he did it anyways. There was that selfish part of him, doing this knowing that he would hurt this beautiful man standing in front of him. Scott cared for him, he really did, but he couldn't keep this up. He was never meant to be with someone, to love someone and be loved in return. He wasn't good enough for that, and he knew it.

"I think it's best for bo-" he instantly grabbed Mitch's wrist mid-slap and lulled him close so he couldn't attempt it again. He fought himself for doing that. Having Mitch this close certainly wasn't helping his resolve.

"No." Mitch countered with ferocity. "You do not get to decide what's best for me, Scott, especially not now. How do you know you're not what's best for me?"

"Mitch, this isn't fair to you."

"Don't you stand there and act like a gentleman now when you could hardly be one during our relationship."

"Fine. If you don't want the gentleman, would you prefer the monster?"

It was an immature quip, and for a moment, acknowledgment flickered in his eyes before he couldn't resist the overwhelming urge to crash his lips against Mitch's. He half expected for him to attempt to slap him again, to push him away, but Mitch did no such thing. He kissed back, and Scott felt it on every level. There was something new added into the passion this time. They poured everything into it, knowing it would be their last. The tongue, the teeth, it all but set fire to his senses. That familiar tingling sensation Mitch caused him was felt all through out his body, that feeling nearly causing his teeth to grind as his lips pulled away. They stayed hovered together, foreheads touching, quickened breathing mingling, as the tension surrounded them and the rain came falling harder to the ground. Slowly, he brushed his lips onto Mitch's cheek, working his way down his neck, the tip of his tongue gathering the familiar taste of Mitch, lungs breathing him into every brain cell to save for later. He pulled back to look into Mitch's eyes one more time, brushing his thumb over his bottom lip that he had come to adore. It was the damnedest thing. He was already missing Mitch.

"One day you'll realize I was right. This really is for the best."

There was a faint rumble heard in the distance as Scott placed a delicate kiss on his lips one last time. He turned and walked away, feeling exactly like a monster, telling himself over and over that this really was the best decision. Mitch deserved more than he would ever be able to give him. Scott had hoped with all his heart that Mitch would move on with a guy who treated him like the delicate, amazing man that he was.

Mitch stood there, stunned, in the pouring rain, tears mixing with the rain falling on him. He watched Scott walk away, his heart breaking even more with every step he took to make the distance grow between them. He wasn't sure he would ever be able to understand.
