Having a bad day and your comments always make me smile so I'm posting this now. Have fun.
The following morning is a bit of a blur. Preparing their bags for Maryland even though they only stayed in Texas for 2 days, saying their goodbye's and chatting a bit more with the others. They almost missed their flight. During the entire flight Scott complained that there's not enough leg room between seats and Mitch just stated what he always did...giraffe's aren't meant to fly...especially clumsy ones. Scott never laughs, but Mitch is pretty sure he keeps complaining just to hear him say it again and again.
They manage to make it to their train in time, even with a 15 minute delay due to snow on the tracks. How cliche is that? Christmas with snow falling. Mitch immerses himself in his thoughts, watching the snow fall out the window. Scott takes this time to examine him carefully. He does that often, watching Mitch's features with attentive eyes. He's always known that Mitch is beautiful, but sometimes he forgets it, so he takes his time to admire him and remind himself of just how gorgeous he really is. Sometimes he takes this opportunity to remind Mitch as well. His blushing cheeks even more stunning.
Finding a cab took longer than expected, probably because of the snow, and the ride took an extra 35 minutes. When the car pulls in the driveway, Mitch is so excited and tired at the same time that he jumps from the car before it even parks. He hasn't seen his family in so long. They live literally across the U.S. from him, so he doesn't get to see them much other than Christmas. It's crazy, but for now he's so happy he feels like he could burst. He nearly runs to the door, Scott following his steps with a big smile on his face. He could laugh, but he knows the feeling, knows what it's like to miss home even when you feel at home too when you're away.
"I'm mad at you honey," is the first thing Nel says when they step into the house. It stops Mitch from running to her and covering her face with kisses. Instead, a frown takes place on his face, confusion in his mind. "Why didn't you tell us? You hid for months. Months Mitch. Why didn't you tell us when you came this summer? Or even before that in April?" She seemed so upset. Nobody moves. It feels like all the air from the room has disappeared.
"I don't know what you're talking about mom." Mitch is so confused, he doesn't know what to say. He doesn't remember lying to his mom or forgetting to tell her anything.
"Scott, my dear, will you explain to your boyfriend why I'm so mad at him?" Nel is so confident, hands on her hips, lips pursed into a thin line.
"Boyfriend?" Scott asks, catching on to what's happening. "Oh my god. Did my mother call you? When did she do that? I thought I made sure she forgot about this. She never forgets it seems." He starts rambling, his hands going to his forehead. Mitch's mouth hangs open, shock running through his veins.
"So you weren't even going to tell me? I'm disappointed in both of you. Why would you want to hide this from me Mitch?" She's on the verge of tears now but her son is too struck to do anything about it.
"It's a big misunderstanding Nel," Scott starts, seeing as his friend is unable to explain the situation. "Mitch and I aren't really dating. My mom came for the end of the semester and Mitch has a bad habit of saying 'honey I'm home' when he comes home and she heard him and she thought he was my boyfriend and I didn't want to disappoint her so we played along with it and forgot about it once she was gone but she didn't forget, she apparently never forgets and she asked me to bring Mitch home for Christmas and we played pretend for the sake of my family but we're not really dating. I'm really sorry, I never meant to drag you into this." Scott explains in about two breaths and feels like an ass for even wanting to pretend anything was going on. He doesn't even hope to be forgiven, Mitch is gonna hate him after this.
