French QuarterIt was almost 7 o'clock in the evening. Caroline had finished getting dressed and making herself presentable more than an hour ago. Her boyfriend was going to be there any minute now. She took out her mirror and checked her hair and makeup again, for the twenty-fifth time this evening.
Her nervousness lasted. All through the ride to Hayley's apartment she interwined her fingers with each other and chewed on her lip. When Klaus stopped the car and she wanted to get out, he stopped her taking her hand in his.
"Caroline, is there anything I can do to ease your nerves? Because I assure you, you have nothing to be concerned about, love. Hayley is the one who should worry. After all, you never stole her boyfriend." he said, trying to reassure her.
Caroline nodded and gulped. "Right. Actually, I think there is something you can do that might make this easier." she said and looked at her boyfriend. He raised his eyebrows when he noticed her poignant gaze. Without further ado, she leaned over to him so that he could kiss her. He cupped her jaw and softly brushed her lips with his. For a few minutes, there was nothing but them in the entire world. When they finally pulled back, she sighed, leaning her forehead against his. "Okay, I think I'm ready to go now." she whispered.
"Happy to be of service." Klaus replied with a smirk as they got out of the car and headed towards the only evening Caroline had been dreading more than her bathroom-cleaning evenings.
Hayley greeted them as they came in while squeezing Tyler's hand, silently signalling him to play it cool. He smiled and said hi.
"When were you planning on telling me he was coming? And why did he bring Caroline?" Tyler whispered to Hayley through gritted teeth on their way to the dining room.
Just as silently, she replied: "If I had told you, you wouldn't have stayed. And I am not spending this dinner with only Klaus and your ex!"
Tyler shot her a glance, but let it be.
Soon, all four of them were sitting at the dining table eating Mexican food. The conversations went a bit rocky, but Caroline did her best to keep a straight face.
"So, Caroline, how did you and Klaus meet?" Hayley asked.
"At a brunch he was hosting at that new gallery of his. I organized it." Caroline replied neutrally.
Tyler spoke up. "Yeah, I remember. You guys met up in his office later that day, right? Sounds like you two started having a really nice time back then, which is pretty funny, since, you know, you were still with me at that point."
Caroline's look shot daggers at her ex and her voice adapted an icy tone when she hissed: "Klaus and I didn't start seeing each other until three weeks after our break-up! Not everyone's a cheater!"
"Yes, I'm afraid if you feel like picking that kind of fight, you are bound to lose, mate." Klaus remarked. Tyler shot him an angry glare, but shut his mouth.
