"What exactly is that supposed to mean?!" Mikael narrowed his eyes and observed his son's girlfriend carefully.

Elena drew in a deep breath and tried to focus on a good way to tell the news, especially with her excitement.

"As I said, the good news are, there are three possible donors among you, so the problem at hand has been solved."

"And the bad news?" Esther asked, confused as to what else there could possibly be.

The brunette bit her lip. "Well, the other news aren't necessarily bad. Honestly, I don't know if they're good or bad, that's actually up to you. Umm, how do I say this... Klaus is AB-. His blood type, I mean."

She looked at everyone in turn, making sure they understood what she was saying.
Elijah furrowed his eyebrows. "So?"

"And Mr Ansel Turner is 0+." After saying that, she looked around, to see if anyone understood what that meant.

Esther slightly shook her head. "I'm afraid you have me at a disadvatage, Elena."

The brunette gave Mrs Mikaelson a poignant glance.

"It is bioligically impossible for an 0+ person to have an AB- child."

Elena gave everyone a second for the information to settle in. Elijah stared at her in disbelief, just like Mikael, Kol and Esther. One of the fundamental facts their lives were built on turned out to be wrong. It seemed unbelievable.

"Are you sure there's no mistake?" Ansel asked, unsure of what to do and a bit helpless.

The brunette doctor nodded confidently. "Dr Frankenstein may be a creep, but he's brilliant at what he does. Unless someone else wrote your name on their blood test, the results are correct. Niklaus Mikaelson is not your son. I'm sorry, sir." She turned to Mikael and Esther, "Now, Mikael on the other hand has the exact same blood type as Klaus."

Completely shellshocked, Mikael turned to his wife. Esther, irritated herself, turned back to the chair she'd been sitting on and sat down again. She was visibly stirred. Her husband sat down next to her and slowly took her hand.

"Esther? My love? Can it be? Niklaus. Was he my son all along?!" the normally so confident no-nonsense Mikael was barely whispering as he said this.

The Mikaelson mother finally turned her face to him and took a deep breath. "I - I- yes, he has to be. I mean, there was one time during that miserable period of ours that we... besides you, there was only Ansel back then and... I thought the timeline didn't match. The chance of Niklaus being yours seemed so slim. And when he was born, he had this blonde hair and that dimple... it reminded me of..." she stopped mid-sentence, glancing towards her former lover who didn't seem to know where to look, "I really thought he was Ansel's. I'm sorry, Mikael. I should have handled things differently."

The Mikaelson patriarch was still for a moment, letting the news sink in. Finally, he said: "No. Don't blame yourself for this, Esther. It's in the past now; dwelling on it will do no good. Fact is, Niklaus is my son. Which means, whatever problems we had all those years ago remained without any lasting consequenses after all. Maybe now, we can finally forget about it."

"I would really like that." Esther let out a breath she'd been holding and looked at her husband with hope.

Meanwhile, Elijah discreetly turned to the visibly disappointed Ansel and quietly but firmly asked him to leave as this was not his place to intervene. Shooting one last glance at his former lover, the man reluctantly agreed with Elijah and left.

Mikael, straightening himself, got up again and approached Elena. "Dr Gilbert, if one of us has to donate for Niklaus Mikaelson, I want it to be me." he said in a confident tone.
