A few days later, Klaus' gallery

"12 000 going once, twice, aaand... sold!" the auctioneer smiled. "Congratulations, sir. May this painting be a delight for you always. And now, to the next piece."

Klaus watched from the sideline of the hall as some of his paintings were being auctioned off to the highest bidders. Hearing the last part, he smirked. The painting that had just been sold for 12 000 dollars was one he himself would hardly pay 20 bucks for if he was being honest. But hey, he wouldn't complain.

Hayley came to stand beside him. "Well, this is going great. If the auction keeps on going like this, we'll make even more than we thought."

"You do realize that most of the money we make tonight will go to charity organizations and not to you, right?" he responded without looking at her.

She huffed. "Yeah, of course I know that. But it's still a success."

Klaus turned his head to the brunette. "Are you saying you're patient enough to wait for your life of luxury until you're actually a mayor's wife?"

Hayley's eyes widened in surprise for a moment as she processed what his words meant. Then, she frowned, seeing the slight smirk on her boss' face. It made her boil.

"That's none of your business. But if you have to know, I actually do love Tyler." she said.

"That's great

"That's great. But, it makes me wonder: should I ask whether or not you would still love him if he wasn't a future mayor?" Klaus raised both eyebrows at her in fake concern.

She rolled her eyes. Klaus kept staring imploringly at her. Finally, she said in an indifferent tone: "It's a nice bonus."

Her former one-night-stand just arched an eyebrow.

Hayley sighed, slowly losing patience. "What do you wanna hear from me? I grew up in a simple apartment and had an average education. Life isn't bad, but I want more! And I'm not ashamed of that! Right now, I work as an accountant and live in a simple apartment. It's not like I don't appreciate you giving me this job after Hope was born, but did you honestly think I would want to do this forever? Do you even know how boring my job is? Tyler is a great guy, he loves me and he can give me the life I want and deserve. If you have a problem with that, then sucks to be you."

Giving one last poignant glance to her boss, Hayley turned around and left, her high heels clicking on thr floor. Klaus watched her leave before returning his attention to the auction.

St. Claire Hospital

Physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted, Elena took off her scrubs. Her shift had ended over an hour ago and she was on the brink of tears. Her day had been terrible.

Still in a sort of trance, she took her coat and left. Once the cool air outside hit her face, she let out a small sigh of relief. It was a small refreshment after a tormenting day. When she got to her car, she considered if it would be smart to drive in her state. She felt like she could cry and barely keep her eyes open at the same time. Then again, her apartment was too far away to walk and going back to the hospital and sleep in the ER room was the last thing she wanted right now.
